The unique sum of characteristics associated with an
individual, group, or thing
There are some aspects of our identities that are stable and
some aspects that change from one situation to the next

Cultural Imperialism: The dominance of one culture over
another
Countries often try to limit the influence of foreign countries
in order to maintain their identity

Examples:



60% of films broadcast by the TV channels in France must be
made in Europe
Saudi Arabia banned the sale of cats and dogs in an effort to
curb Western influence (pet owning has never been
common in the Arab world)
The Chinese government forced 2,000 Western companies
(located in China) to change their names to more Chinese
sounding names

Is economic competition introduced by globalization (more
businesses) is leading to more individualistic societies (instead
of collectivist)?
The rapid changes of globalization have re-vitalized
fundamentalism – a desire for the past and a loss of tolerance
for differences in religion and culture

Marginalization: The social process of being forced to the
fringe/lower classes of society
Homogenization: The erasing of differences among
peoples, and as a result, they become more and more
similar
