Primary PE and Sport Premium
The Ofsted document ‘Inspecting primary school PE and school sport: new funding’
(Sept 2013) outlines that inspectors will assess and report on:
“how effectively this new funding is being used to improve PE and sport
provision”
Acceptable uses of the funding include:
•Establishing strong, sustainable partnerships with local community sports clubs
•Providing places for pupils in after-school sport clubs
•Purchasing specialist equipment and teaching resources to develop non-traditional
activity
•Engaging the least active pupils in after-school activities

• PE Department:
 2 mandatory PE lessons per week and 2 optional.
 After-school clubs on offer consist of tennis and football as these
are the sports most pupils want to do.
 PE department believes it is doing a good job as the majority of
pupils find lessons enjoyable and interesting.
 Majority of pupils also believe they are making good progress in
PE.
 57% of pupils are participating in in 5 hours or more curricular or
extra-curricular sport.
 57% of pupils are interested in getting a job in sport in the
future.

Case Study
• Split into 3 groups and using the results through the school’s
Me and My login assess the school’s PE and Sport provision.
• Key areas to look at:
 Quality of PE (Questions 10,13,14 and 16)
 School Sport – levels of participation in curricular and extra
curricular sport
 Sport in Demand
 Volunteering and leadership (Questions 11,17 and 18)
• Split For the purposes of the exercise, only consider the
gender demographic to be of relevance.

Case Study - Results
• While 57% of all pupils found PE enjoyable and interesting and
made them interested in getting a job in sport in the future, all
of this 57% was made up of male pupils.
• All female pupils stated that they did not enjoy PE and did not
feel they were making progress.
• Female participation was greatly lower than male participation
for curricular and extra-curricular participation.
• Whilst the majority of pupils wanted to do more Football and
Tennis, this was due to the higher number of boys at the
school.
• All girls wanted to play Hockey and Volleyball – which was not
being offered by the school.

• None of the girls were currently interested in getting a job in
sport in the future
• None of the girls were currently taking part in Sports
volunteering or leadership but all were interested in doing so.
• 75% of male pupils were currently taking part in Sports
volunteering or leadership. Of those not taking part, none
were interested in doing so.

Case Study - Conclusions
• When planning PE and Sport provision the PE department has
considered only the majority results without considering
demographic differences.
• Girls at the school appear to have become entirely disengaged
with the PE and Sport provision with minimal levels of
participation
• Sports/activities on offer at the school, whilst intended to meet
the demands of the majority of pupils, only truly match the
demands of the boy pupils.

• Use survey builder tool to develop bespoke survey targeting
the girl pupils
• Use this to fully understand perceptions of these pupils, and
the reasons behind them.
• Implement departmental development plan to ensure PE and
Sport provision meets the needs of all pupils across multiple
demographics.

The Ashby data is being used to shape our future delivery of core PE. We were debating
on whether to revert to some single sex groups, or even single ability groups, and we
wanted feedback from our students on this matter. The software provided us with the
platform to explore this in detail and help us to shape our offer to meet out pupils needs.

We used the tool to help with our internal departmental review. It gave us powerful
information to back up our judgement from a small interview conducted with a student
panel. The results focused on the Ofsted framework and were very useful in that they
helped us to adapt our curriculum offer and highlighted areas where pupils wanted us to
develop links outside of school. We are now looking to use the software to cover the
whole faculty and not just PE.
