Introduction
• JLab is a World leading experimental facility
in Nuclear Physics.
• Located in Newport News, Virginia, in the
proximity of five Universities with Physics
Departments.
• With numerous programs that impact
education and outreach, in particular at
universities.
• These programs have important impact in the
education of minority scientists.
Joint and Bridge Faculty Appointments
Appointments aimed at:
stimulating Faculty growth in Nuclear Physics at various
universities.
increasing participation of HBCU’s and other MEI in Nuclear
Science.
Joint Appts.: indefinite time regulated by MOU. Typically 50% of
Faculty salary and benefits supported through Jlab.
Bridge Appts.: similar conditions but for limited time, 2 to 5 years.
Joint Positions at Local Universities
• Hampton University: 4 joint appointments (1 Th., 3
Exp.), plus support for 3 graduate students and 1
postdoc.
• Norfolk State University: 2 (Exp.) and 1/2 postdoc.

Jlab. Graduate school. 3 weeks program since 1986.
25 to 30 students per year, about 30% women and
minorities.
• UnIPhy-REU: Hampton Univ. 8 week program for
minority undergraduates. Accepts up to 8 students.
Among the research sites is Jlab.
• Summer internships for high school students (9 per
summer).
• Summer internships for undergraduate physics
students.
K-12
Several programs with Newport News public
schools.
BEAMS: 6th grade students spend 1 week at
Jlab involved in math and science activities.
An effective way to attract minority students
to science.
Impact
• 2002-2004: 7 PhD and 8 MS graduates
from HBCU and MEI with research
directly related to JLab.
• Hampton University: 28 PhD to date, 13
in Nuclear Physics, 17 African American
(6 in Nuclear Physics).
