Brutality of war is common in both texts
In TWTWB, it is expressed through the teenagers having to survive by
themselves as their family and friends have been taken away by the
soldiers. The characters experience using weapons that are unfamiliar in
order to just survive
This theme is also evident in the Shoe Horn Sonata, where the women and
children are trapped in the prisoner of war camp. Bridie and Sheila create
conflict between their friendship due to the long lasting effects of war. Sheila
kept a secret from Bridie that was not told until 50 years later, where Sheila
gave herself to a Japanese soldier in order to save Bridies life
The brutality of war can be seen in both texts as quite devastating and can
have long lasting effects

Friendship is evident in both texts
In TWTWB, the group sticks together through all circumstances. They put
large emphasis on the safety of each person in the group during this hard
and dangerous time. The friendship is depicted as on going as they started
off on a camping trip with one another then were united even more when
they returned home.
Friendship is depicted in the Shoe Horn Sonata through Bridie and Sheila.
Their friendship begun when trying to survive in the ocean after their ship
sunk, they then become very close in the prisoner of war camp. This can be
seen when Sheila risks her own life to save Bridie’s. Their friendship is
based on memoires and on the past which has brought them together in the
play after 50 years to reunite them on why friendship is so important.
Friendship in both texts play a significant role, friendship is seen as largely
important and vital to sustain hope and memories
