Students

1
 IREAD-3
is a reading test based on the
Indiana Academic Standards.
 It
measures reading skills through Grade 3.
 IREAD-3
will be administered on:
March 16-20, 2015
June 1-2, 2015 (Retest/Makeup Test)
2
 Public
Law 109 requires the evaluation of
reading skills for students who are in Grade 3
in the Spring of their 3rd grade year.
 Students
need to read proficiently before
moving onto Grade 4.
 This
means if a student does NOT PASS
IREAD-3, they will be retained in 3rd Grade
3
 Based
on the Indiana Academic Standards,
IREAD-3 specifically assesses basic reading
standards through grade three.
 IREAD-3
is comprised of three test sessions,
all of which are administered in one day.
 The
test must be given from the dates of
March 16 to March 20.
4

Standards based instruction & daily assessment of student
progress towards mastering the skills being taught.

All data is used by teachers to adjust and differentiate
instructional practice.

Electronic data following students from one year to the next to
ensure best instructional practices.

Close monitoring of all benchmark assessments. This includes SRI,
Acuity, and Reading Running Records. This information helps
teachers to identify individual students strengths & weaknesses
and allows them to adjust their instruction to best meet the
needs of your child.
5

We begin the year with the SRI test. There are four
tests during the year.

The SRI is a computerized reading test which gives
teachers an idea as to the level of comprehension or
understanding a child will have with a text.

We can use that to evaluate their needs based on
their ability to understand what they read.

A child’s lexile score can be used to help them choose
appropriate books in the library.
6
 The
end of the year benchmark for third
grade is between 600-900.
 However,
each child, due to the
differentiation of the reading program, is
expected to make a gain of 100 points from
their beginning of the year score.
7

Running records are a tool used by teachers to
evaluate students’ reading and comprehension.
They are used to help find students’ reading
levels, check their fluency, and find weaknesses
in comprehension.
 Teachers use this information to adjust
instruction to help students progress with their
reading by planning for individualized support
within the classroom.


Running records are done one-on-one with
students. A third grade benchmark is level P.
8
 Begins
in 3rd grade
 The Acuity testing takes place three times
over the course of the year and will give
teachers a picture of what the student is
able to grasp in math, language arts, social
studies, and science.
 The benefit of Acuity is that teachers get
immediate results and are then able to focus
on skills needed for each child.
9
 In
addition, Franklin offers the RtI services
starting at the kindergarten level.
 The purpose of RTI is to provide
differentiated support to ensure student
academic success.
 RTI service can range from differentiated
instruction within the classroom, small group
instruction, and individualized
instruction/support.

assessments serving a different purpose.

 The
state has not given us a timeline for
results as of yet. We are hoping to have
results, no later than the end of April.
 Are
used to determine promotion for general
education students
 Students
who do not pass will be required to
participate in a remediation program.
19
Good Cause Exemptions that allow for flexibility in
determining access to grade four reading and
literacy instruction include:
Students who have previously been retained two
times prior to Grade 4.
 Students with disabilities whose Case Conference
Committee has determined that promotion is
appropriate.
 English Learner students whose Individual Learning
Plan (ILP) Committee has determined that promotion
is appropriate.

20
 Students
who do not pass IREAD-3 in the
spring or the summer:
- Will continue to receive instruction in
Grade 3 Reading
- Will be officially reported as a third-grader
- Will fully participate in the Grade 3 ISTEP+
assessment
21
Retention…
 Is identified as a last resort in PL 109
 Is focused on reading/literacy curriculum and
instruction
 Requires schools to continue to provide students
who do not pass IREAD-3 with Grade 3 reading
and literacy instruction.
 Methods of organizing students for differentiated
instruction are determined locally.
22
 Review
your child’s report card to become
familiar with their reading level.
 Make reading at home a priority.
 Read aloud with your child.
 Encourage all reading – magazines, comic
books, etc.
 Keep a dictionary handy.
 Be a good example by reading together with
your child.
 Stay in contact with your child’s teacher.
