EXPOSITION IN A STORY
SETTING
“ setting (ˈsɛtɪŋ)n1. the surroundings in which something is
set; scene
From: The Free Dictionary by Farlex
”
In literature, the word ‘setting’ is used to identify and establish the time, place and mood of the
events of the story. It basically helps in establishing where and when and under what
circumstances the story is taking place.

PLACE AND TIME
While simple to state, they have the most
impact in a story. The time period and
geographic location put the characters in
a specific type of story.
MOOD
A good author sets the mood with
emotional details.
The ‘mood’ refers to how an
author shapes a specific emotional
perspective. It refers to the
particular atmosphere to the
work. The final tone evokes
specific, appropriate responses
from the reader.
SENSORY DETAILS
Authors use all five of the senses to
describe the setting in a story… maybe
even six!
SETTING HELPS THE
EXPOSITION BY PROVIDING
Details that set the background
Details the characters can’t state or say
Details that drive the plot
