Gheorghe Zamfir

Gheorghe Zamfir (6 th of April 1941) is a Romanian pan flute musician who has received 120 golden and platinum disc awards and sold over 40 million albums. He is widely known as "Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute".

Zamfir is known for playing an expanded version of the traditional Romanian-style pan flute of 20 pipes to 22, 25, 28 and 30 pipes to increase its range, and obtaining as many as nine tones from each pipe He is making his own flutes, using bamboo wood, and he is calibrating them with honey.

In 2003, Zamfir is creating the flute called “The Giant”, which has 42 pipes (1.35 m/1.2m).

Zamfir conquers the world

Already in 1966, Gheorghe Zamfir had released his first record. The 1970s and 1980s see an artist who changes sound studios, great concert halls and continents. In 1974, he composes the first “Mass for Peace” for the pan flute, choir, organ and orchestra. In 1976, his single “Été d’Amour” becomes one of the hits of the year. Zamfir makes stylistic and exemplary recordings with organ accompaniment, small ensembles and large orchestras that produce self composition, classical and religious works, ethnic and popular music. He gives legendary concerts in New York’s Carnegie Hall, in Royal Albert Hall in London, in Paris’s Olympia, in Shanghai, Tokyo and Cape Town. He is received by the Japanese empress and heads of state throughout the world and gives the pope a sampling of his art form at the Vatican.

Crina Coco Popescu

The Romanian mount climber Crina Coco Popescu, who is only 14 years old reached the highest volcano on the Earth – Ojos del Salado, 6.893m – on the 28 th of December 2008.

After a solitary climbing that lasted for 12 hours, she becomes the youngest mount climber that had ever reached this top.

The representing of the National Park “Atacama Zona Ojos del Salado”, Maximiliano Espinoza, a legend of the Chilean mount climbing, declared that he is impressed by the unique accomplishment of Crina Coco Popescu.

Crina Coco Popescu had reached, starting at the age of ten: Dente del Gigante (4.014m), Mont Blanc (4.810m), Kalapatar (5.545m), Kazbek (5.047m), Damavand (5.761m), Alam Kooh (4.850m), being the youngest mount climber that had ever reached most of these tops.

She is a member of “Clubul Montan Altitudine Rasnov” and she goes in all her expeditions with her father and coach – Ovidiu Popescu.

Emil racovita

Emil Racoviţă (15 th November 1868 – 17 th November 1947) was a Romanian biologist, zoologist, speleologist and explorer of Antarctica.

Racoviţă was the first Romanian to have gone on a scientific research expedition to the Antarctic, more than 100 years ago.

He is considered to be, together with René Jeannel, one of the founders of biospeleology. In 1919, Racoviţă became head of the Biology Department at the Upper Dacia University (now the Babeş-Bolyai University) in Cluj. He founded the world's first Speleological Institute in the 26 th of April 1920 there.

The Belgica Expedition

The expedition was led by the Belgian officer Adrien de Gerlache, who was also the ship's owner. It was the ship that gave its name to the whole expedition. The three-mast ship was equipped with a 160 horse-power engine. The 19 members of the team were of various nationalities, a rare thing for that time. Racoviţă was the first researcher to collect botanical and zoological samples from areas beyond the Antarctic Circle. Belgica made the first daily meteorological recordings and measurements in Antarctica, every hour, for a whole year. The scientists also collected information on oceanic currents and terrestrial magnetism, with as many as 10 volumes of scientific conclusions being published at the end of the expedition, which was considered a success.

Photos of the time show that he was hardly recognizable after returning from the expedition.

Gheorghe hagi

Gheorghe Hagi ( born in Săcele), is a Romanian football player. He was famous for his passing, close control, long shots and is regarded as one of the best offensive midfielders in Europe of the 80s and 90s.

Nicknamed "The Maradona of the Carpathians", he is considered a hero in Romania as well as in Turkey. He has won Romania’s "Player of the Year" award six times, and was recently named Romanian football player of the century.

Stephen the great

Stephen III of Moldavia or Stephen III, also known as Stephen the Great was Prince of Moldavia between 1457 and 1504 and the most prominent representative of the House of Muşat.

During his reign, he strengthened Moldavia and maintained its independence against the ambitions of Hungary, Poland and the Ottoman Empire. Stephen achieved fame in Europe for his long resistance against the Ottomans. He was victorious in 34 of his 36 battles, and was one of the first to gain a decisive victory over the Ottomans at the Battle of Vaslui (the 10 th of January 1575), after which Pope Sixtus IV deemed him

(true Champion of Christian Faith).

Ecaterina teodoroiu

Ecaterina Teodoroiu was a Romanian woman who fought and died in World War I, and is considered a heroine of Romania.

She was born in the village of Vădeni, in Southern Romania. She studied for 4 years in Vădeni and Târgu Jiu and graduating from the Girls' School in Bucharest. In 1916 Romanian Kingdom entered World War I on the Entente side.

In October 1916, Ecaterina joined the Romanian Army during the first Jiu battle when General Ion Dragalina's 1st Army repulsed the 9th German Army offensive.

In November, she was wounded and hospitalized, but came back to the front where she was soon decorated, advanced in rank to Sublocotenent (Second Lieutenant) and given the command of a 25-man platoon. For her bravery she was awarded the Military Virtue Medal, 1st Class.

On the 3th of September 1917 she was killed in the Battle of Mărăşeşti (in Vrancea County), where she was hit in the chest by German machine gun fire. According to some accounts, her last words before dying were:

"Forward, men, I'm still with you!"

Ion luca caragiale

Ion Luca Caragiale was a Romanian playwright, short story writer, poet, theater manager, political commentator and journalist.

He is considered one of the greatest playwrights in Romania and in it’s literature, as well as one of its most important writers and a leading representative of local humor.

Although few in number, Caragiale's plays constitute the most accomplished expression of Romanian theatre , as well as being important for criticizing the late 19th century Romanian society.

Being a genius in how to name his characters, making ridiculous situations and having a great sense of humor that is present in his plays, Caragiale’s political comedies reflect the provincial corruption and petty ambitions of political figures.

All his works, even his short stories are still perfectly describing the Romanian society in a satirical, realistic and funny way.

He is considered Romania’s greatest playwright, and alongside Mihai Eminescu, Ion Creanga and Ioan Slavici he is considered one of Romania’s classics.
