In 2002
 Global tourist arrivals: 715 million, up 3.1%
(Asia-Pacific realizing a rise of 7.9%)
 Asia-Pacific:
arrivals----113 million, 16% of world total
receipts---US$87 billion, 19% of world total
intra-regional tourism----80% of outbound
tourism in the region
annual growth rate----6% in recent years
 China’s tourism
total income of tourism----5.2% of GDP
Foreign exchange earning: an annual
average increase of 19% 1979 – 2002
Income from domestic tourism: an annual
average increase of 16.6% 1991 - 2002

Inbound arrivals from intra-regional and neighboring
countries ----increase
Hong Kong and Macau ---- maintain the largest
inbound markets
Tourists from Japan and South Korea ---- increase and
China ’ s recent marketing and promotion in the two
countries will generate good effects
Tourism from Southeast Asia is recovering ---- increase,
but the explosions and outbreak of epidemic diseases
may bring negative impacts
Growth in the long-distant markets, such as Europe
and America ---- slow down because of terrorism,
SARS and economic recession. Safety will be the first
consideration of long-haul tourists.

Regional Cooperation
Judging from the present and near future tourism
development, intra-regional short and medium haul
travel will be the major mode of tourism, especially
within the Asia-Pacific region. Therefore, there is an
urgent need for regional cooperation in developing
tourism. To promote Asia-Pacific regional
cooperation on the basis of 10+3 is of great
importance.
