Ten years on, what has
person centred planning got
to offer in a climate of
change?
Conference
30th November 2006
Person centred planning conference
The event held at Trinity Community Initiatives
on the Knockmore Road in Lisburn was attended by
over 100 senior managers and staff from all 4 Trusts in
the EHSSB and staff from the SHSSB and Positive Futures.
The title “Ten years on, what has person centred planning
got to offer in a climate of change?” made reference to the
fact that this way of working has been firmly established
within Northern Ireland for over ten years.
The conference was an opportunity to reflect on the impact of this
approach and to review the contribution it has to make to good quality
care as we move to new structures and organisations.
The conference was funded by the EHSSB and was opened by Hugh
Connor Director of Social Services.

Use of the workbook






Discussion using workbooks in groups following each
presentation, encouraged people to consider application
in their work setting and plan future action within their
own Trusts:
Over 78% of participants felt that the workbook was a
very good tool to guide discussion.
Feedback comments included:
Excellent opportunity for reflection with colleagues
Good discussion on how to apply PCP
We need to have these opportunities from time to time
to help us learn.
A good tool for developing PCP within organisations.

Good paper versus bad paper…
In a culture in which good paper takes
precedence over a good life The mission/vision is about helping
people get good lives
BUT
Efforts to get good lives are not noticed
WHILE
The behavior of senior managers tells
front line managers that good paper is
rewarded and bad paper is punished
AND
The people who use the services often
have good plans but lives where what
is really important to them is absent

development of this approach.
“To create a culture in the
work environment and the
need for leadership
involvement got me really

Productive Meetings.

Thoughts on person centred review
presentation













Empowering process
Transition reviews – provide facilitator
Clients review – involved totally in
process
Useful and empowering
Extremely useful in children’s services
Older people – domiciliary reviews
Challenges with PC review model
Informal process – visuals powerful
Valuable contribution – successful
already (SHSSB)
Aspire to do
User involvement modelling, develop
culture of this
Good model for adult disability –
flexible budgets, action plan
Good examples of this UCHT –
managing risk issues


Helen outlined work on
transition planning with
young people leaving
special education. The
use of this model greatly
enhanced effective
planning with the young
person for their future.
“Inspiring on person
centred reviews.”
