End Punctuation
• End marks—periods, question marks, and
exclamation points—are used to indicate the
purpose of a sentence.
• Periods are used for declarative statements
• Question Marks are used for questions, which
are usually identified by question words– who,
what, where, why, how, when.
• Exclamation Points are used after
exclamations or strong commands

On TV last night there was a segment on teams playing lacrosse
What a rough sport lacrosse must be
Did you know that North American Indians developed this
game
Before Columbus came to the Americas in A.D. 1492, the
Iroquois were playing lacrosse in what is now upper New York

sport in America
Lacrosse is played by two opposing teams

The name of the game comes from la crosse, French for a
bishop’s staff, which the lacrosse stick resembles
Commas
• There are three main times to use commas
correctly. 90% of the time you will ever have
to use a comma will fit under one of these
three times. (Dates, Places, and Quotations
aren’t included in these main three.)
• 1. Use commas to separate independent
clauses when they are joined by any of these
seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for,
or, nor, so, yet.
• Mapleton Jr. High School is just like the Justice
League Watchtower, for they are both full of
superheroes.
• Both hobbits and Mrs. Adams are short, but
Mrs. Adams is not a hobbit.
• Batman refuses to kill people, so he is allowed
to be a cartoon.
• 2. Use commas to separate three or more
words, phrases, or clauses written in a series.
• Ms. Tippetts likes reading, writing, and
planning her hostile world takeover.
• Bugs Bunny eats carrots, carrot cake, and
carrot cassorole.
• My favorite movies are The Avengers, Les
Miserables, and Life of Pi.
• 3. Use commas where there is a natural pause.
– A. Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b)
phrases, or c) words that come before the main
clause.
• First, you put your right foot in.
• Then, you put your right foot out.
• Lastly, you shake it all about.

– B. Use a pair of commas in the middle of a
sentence to set off clauses, phrases, and words
that are not essential to the meaning of the
sentence. Use one comma before to indicate the
beginning of the pause and one at the end to
indicate the end of the pause
• Chelsea, Mr. Chappell’s beautiful wife, is very talented.
• The Legend of Zelda, which is my favorite video game,
tests your skill with the sword and your brain.
• Rugby, which is very similar to football, is a game with
lots of injuries.
• 3. Use commas where there is a natural pause.
– C. Use commas to separate two or more
coordinate adjectives that describe the same
noun. Be sure never to add an extra comma
between the final adjective and the noun itself or
to use commas with non-coordinate adjectives.

somehow attractive to her.
• My very educated, talented mother just made us pizza.

Comma Collision!
Rules:
• Each sticky note represents a comma, and must be
placed correctly in a sentence.
• If a sticky note is placed incorrectly, the student who
placed it recieves two sticky notes that they must
place.
• Each student must start the game with five sticky
notes.
• A student may only place one sticky note per sentence.
• The first row to finish will receive five bonus points.
• When the whole class runs out of sticky notes, we can
play silent ball.
• Students must not injure each other, or school
property in their quest to win.
