Owen Byrne 09/11/06

• Project Background • Current Status – Connectivity – Service delivery • Implementation – Network build – Design – Technologies used • Pilot phase oriented

Outline

Some Background:

• Initial ITnet Services Scoping task • Decision to commence as a “pilot” project • 3 pilot sites chosen: – Waterford IT – Limerick IT – Blanchardstown IT • 3 primary services chosen: – General IP transit – Connectivity to An Cheim – Commodity IP transit

Integration Project Team

Implementation Team Project Manager Martin McCarrick Brian Boyle Owen Byrne John Boland Steering Committee HEA DES Council of Directors IUA (CHIU) DIT Mary Kerr Ian McKenna Brendan Murphy, Tim Creedon Michael Nowlan, Brendan Tolan David Scott

Current Status (Connectivity)

• Dark fibre connections to WIT, LIT, ITB currently in production • Dark fibre connections to LYIT, Sligo IT, DKIT GMIT, Cork IT and An Cheim now complete • Circuit rollout for remaining sites currently underway (RFT process) • Backbone regional PoP installed in WIT • Backbone regional PoP scheduled for install in DKIT next week • Further dark fibre quotations to eGov are being evaluated (Commodity IP)

Current Status (Services)

• General IP transit for ITB, WIT, LIT has been migrated (each at 260Mbps) • Technical solution for An Cheim fully tested; now awaiting approval for cutover – Now a total of 3 service providers – Failover scenarios simulated in lab • Some outstanding negotiations still required regarding Commodity IP transit link

Implementation

• Use of regional Government MANs reached via NBE (dark fibre) • Network design in access network (last mile) • Use of CWDM for multiple wavelengths • New Points of Presence • Equipment used on NBE & regional network

Access Network (Government MANs)

• Previously, regional dark fibre was a scarcity

Points of Presence

• Regional Layer 2 & Layer 3 PoP located in room A0-060 Main Building University of Limerick • Disaster recovery PoP located in Library comms room (@ intersection of access & core ring) • CPE located in LIT comms room 1A.05

– Patched through adjacent room 1A.06

• Backbone transmission PoPs located in ESBT substations, at Killonan and Drumline

Network Design (Waterford IT)

Templates Waterford Regional λ Planning It is planned to eventually provide a resilient connection to both Carriganore & College St. by forming a MAN ring. Waterford Core Ring

Blanchardstown IT

• Dark fibre point-to-point circuit to DCU PoP – Complimented by existing 10Mbps circuit • Substantial civil works complete at DCU after lengthy delays • General IP connectivity finally migrated on 26/10/06

Services Implementation

• Initial services migration: – Connectivity to An Cheim – General Internet connectivity – Commodity IP transit

E-Gov Services/Commodity IP Transit

• Progress to date has been slow • Requires circuit to the e-Gov interconnect at 40-50 Citywest • Negotiations with eGov regarding most suitable interconnect point are ongoing – One possibility is INEX at DEG, and/or Telecity • Not just required for commodity IP, but also for rollout of e-Gov services

An Cheim

• Resilient dark fibre ring between HP hosting centre and HEAnet’s Citywest PoP is complete • Colocation contract signed with HP for 1 cabinet • Equipment and cabinet are installed • Cross connect to An Cheim row is in place • Layer 1,2,3 design & testing phase complete • Implementation restricted to11pm on Friday nights!

• Hope to shortly begin actual cutovers

General IP Migration (LIT)

• On 19/07/06 LIT’s IP connectivity was migrated to transit HEAnet directly

General IP Migration (WIT)

• On 27/07/06 WIT’s IP connectivity migrated to transit HEAnet network directly:
