Open Source Software
Why Pay More than Free?
Janice Wilson Butler
Juan Chavez, Jr.
Free Software
• 1984 – Richard Stallman started GNU
project
– Goal: No one pays for software
– Eliminate domination by few and powerful
• To protect “free” created GNU (GNUs
not Unix) – General Public License
Free Software Foundation
• General Public License
– May copy and distribute software
– Cannot prohibit others from doing same
– Cannot charge or restrict licensing
– Works derived from licensing must remain
free
Free Software Foundation
• Caused rift between computer industry
and free software foundation
• Seemed to be strong anti-business
message
• Software companies not interested in
free software
Enter Open Source Movement
Open Source – (Linus Torvald) greater
liberties with licensing
Allows use & redistribution without
compensation or credit.
•Welcome
There is great joy in the pursuit of
creating something that improves the
world. And there is lots of fun involved
with doing things you enjoy doing. Open
source has become the canvas for great
art as well as great science. It is a
means of self-expression. And
something that facilitates discovering
joy.
Embracing Insanity
Linux, Mac and Windows
The social impact of two-way
communication, the opportunities for a
measure of fame, the recognition of joy
in computing, and the ability to
contribute something meaningful to
others regardless of background are
revolutionizing the computer world.
Embracing Insanity
• You can and should shape your own
future; because if you don't someone
else surely will.
– Joel Barker
