„Online“ Resources: Starting with Basics

 What are the major characteristics of e-journals, e packages, e-books and/or databases?

 How can you buy them?

 Trends  The organizational impact of electronic journals and how a Subscription Agency helps libraries to deal with it?

Four types of „Online“ Resources

 Journal subscriptions as individual e-journals  E-Journal packages purchased by consortia or by individual institution  Databases  E-book packages

Subscribing to individual e-Journals?

Subscription Models

1.Print comes with free online 2.Print plus (paid) online 3.Online only

Price

100% 105% – 125% 80% – 100%

Questions to be answered before requesting a quote:

• What type of access? single or simultaneous users, one site, multi-site, total or core FTE (faculty plus students), etc • How do you authenticate?

Where to Buy?

From your agent together with print and other e-journals. EBSCO for example will quote the journal type as you wish and set it up for you and help you with registration.

Buying e-journals as publisher packages Models

1.

“E-on-top” with non-cancellation of core subscriptions 2. E-only 3. E-only with high discount on print (ddp)   

Structure/Issues to Clarify

 Institutional license or consortia  Cross access, full collection or subject collection   What kind of long-term archiving solution do you need?

Availability of Back files Duration of contract - Multi-year or Single year Authentication method (IP’s, ID+Password, Proxy) Document lending rights

Words of Caution

 The cost will be based on current spend in subscriptions.  Non-cancellation clauses  You will not spend less; you will have access to more content

Further ways of accessing e-journals

• • •

Full Text Databases

Good for expanding access to non-core journals.

Provide wide backfile across different publishers and thereby saves document delivery costs.

Watch out replacing journal subscriptions; composition of databases change and many journal have delayed publication (3 to 12 months) in databases.

Some Examples of FT Databases

• Academic Search Premier • Medline with Full Text • Communication and Mass Media Complete • Environment complete • Business Source Premier • SocIndex with Full Text • Literary Reference Center • Computer Source

E-Books

      eBooks are digital editions of print titles eBooks are readable and downloadable immediately, so there is no waiting for shipment eBooks are accessible from your own personal library, on your PC, laptop or handheld device eBooks are generally available in Adobe ® PDF and XML formats.

eBooks are available in different collections, packages and sometimes individually eBooks can be also bought at your agent

What are the benefits to your library?

Broader access to content

Wider access and use

Less shelf space needed

No risk of damage and theft

No physical and manual processing required

Higher usage of content

No shipping, storage or handling costs.

Current Trends in E-Resources

• The use and purchase of online journals is

growing dramatically

. Subscriptions with online component exceed print only volume.

E-books

are the new trend.

• Publisher pricing and licensing models are still evolving.

Expect changes

. Less print with free online, more paid online, e-only, tier classifications, usage based pricing, etc.

Further concentration

of publishers (recently Wiley/Blackwell) • Individual libraries need to

strategically plan

how they will most efficiently purchase online access and combine with print.

• The library as a physical location will change, but

the importance of the librarian does not lessen

. The librarian will need to become more technically and copyright oriented.

Complexity is dramatically increased

. The management of e journals needs new tools and methods.
