Most successful teams use a corporate model to focus their team members:
◦ Strategic Planning: develops the overall strategy required to score the most
points and develop a general specification.
◦ Business Management: develops and implements the fundraising and
budgeting plan.
◦ Engineering Development: overall responsibility for the robot product. Based
on the specification, it identifies and creates design, electronics, hydraulics,
software development and mechanical engineering subsystems.
◦ Manufacturing and Test: builds and test the robot. (per the specification)
◦ Media Services: handles artwork, web design, crate building, and public
relations.
◦ Program Mgmt: Things never run smoothly; competition rules limit what can
be spent on the robot, certain types of materials may be cost prohibitive…
trade-offs are constantly being made. Program Mgmt provides the
overarching decision making process using cost, schedules and technical
performance for its guidance.
Most importantly LI FIRST Robotics teams develop creates the culture and
spirit of Teamwork, Gracious Professionalism, “Coopertition”.

Accomplishments
Introduced FIRST Robotics competitions on L.I. in
1999.
In 2008, 46 high schools competed at Hofstra
University – 39 from L.I.
Our students have received over $2.5M in college
scholarships to date as a result of LI FIRST Robotics
participation in the program.

Focus
• FLL is a result of an exciting alliance between FIRST
and the LEGO Company. Guided by adult mentors,
FLL students solve real-world engineering
challenges and develop important life skills.
FLL Values
• Respect each other in the best spirit of teamwork
• Behave with courtesy and compassion for others at all times
• Honor the spirit of friendly competition
• Act with Integrity
• Demonstrate gracious professionalism
• Encourage others to adopt these principles
Janet Anderson
Dr. Fayth Vaughan Shavuo, Principal Roosevelt High School
“The success of the Roosevelt High School Robotics Team is an example of the
power of partnership in action. Four years ago, Northrop Grumman took the lead in
supporting our rookie team by providing both human and financial resources to our school
community. The award winning Rough Riders Robotics team has become a symbol of
academic focus and improved achievement in our school community.”
Dr. Frank Saracino, Former Superintendent of East Meadow USFD
“One of the roles of education is to recognize national needs and the needs of
its citizenry. In today's technologically explosive world, it is important that we offer
programs to provide cutting edge experiences for our students. The FIRST Robotics
program not only offers technological skill building but also provides it with in an
enjoyable, motivational experience.”
Janet Anderson
Bob Martin, Director Technical Operations, Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems
Eastern Region
“Nationally and locally we need to generate more engineering talent. This
program fosters a “connection” between students and mentors that is unique in its
concept and execution. Students benefit from learning the “how and why” of engineering,
and mentors are rekindled by the spirit of the young people they work with. This is truly a
win/win program for our future. We cannot afford to let it fail.”
Hans Zobel, CEO FESTO
“We have found that this competition truly works to inspire young people to
pursue careers in the engineering field. The students of today are the workforce of
tomorrow. We owe it to the communities in which we live, to help with this event.”
Nick Amoruso, Principal School Construction Consultants, Inc.
" The FIRST Robotics Program provides children with the opportunity to
connect with mentors in the various fields of Science, Technology and
Engineering. This valuable learning experience will provide our children with a strong
foundation for all the accomplishments they achieve throughout life. Their success
can have an astounding impact on the world."
Janet Anderson
Scott Schuler, Chief Marketing Officer, Ziehm Medical LLC
“FIRST provides an opportunity to invest in the shaping the future of our
workforce, by providing real world experiences to students otherwise not found in high
school. While high school classes provide an academic background in individual areas,
and sports provide opportunity to be part of a team, FIRST combines hands-on
experiences in employable skills such as project management, technology, marketing,
and finance… all within a team environment. FIRST is not about building robots, it’s
about building the type of future employees needed for business success.”
Dr. Kristie Golden, Director, Grants & Research, The Long Island Home
South Oaks Hospital
“The team effort lends itself to the inclusion of youth with all different interests
and capabilities. The overall competition brings out the best in the students and
provides a natural setting to demonstrate how helpful and supportive they can be
toward one another.“
Frank Otto, EDO CEO retired
“SBPLI’s FIRST Robotics is the best kept secret on Long Island”

Why Sixty over Sixty Awards
Program?
 Opportunity to honor individuals over the age of
sixty who have made positive, tangible contributions
to making Long Island, the great community that it is,
and do so on an annual basis. These people are the
dreamers who have achieved their dreams…and will
inspire the next generation of dreamers!
 Create an even greater awareness of Long Island’s
FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST LEGO League
programs and the opportunities they provide high
school and middle school students, complementing
the LI school districts’ goal of achieving scholastic
excellence.
 Provide recognition to sponsors who ensure the
continued support of our students as they compete in
the LI regional events throughout this and the next
decade.
