The Explore Option in the
Global Health Pathway
• For UCSF medical students without an official GH Pathway
commitment
• Supports students investigating GH through short-term
clinical or research work (1 to 3 months)
• Usually choose research in summer after first year
• Additional opportunities (especially clinical) during the
elective periods of 4th year
All such students who seek funding, credit, or plan
research should see a GH advisor
Going Abroad
• Start early
• Funding deadline April 15 for summer (RAPtr)
• No need for credit in summer after year 1
• Student-designed research takes extra prep time (IRB)

Bridges Program: GOALS
• Provide an 8-week summer lab to test out new ideas
and structures for the UCSF Bridges Curriculum.
• Immerse students in workplace learning experiences
in order to provide real-time input to the Bridges
design process.
• Engage and support students, faculty, and staff to
identify needs of the systems in which they are
working in order to design new learning experiences
and assessment tools.
• ~15 Ambassadors, in teams of 2-4, will work with team
on project, and liaise with Bridges design groups

• Follow standard RAPtr application process; reviewers will
identify PRL-eligible applicants
• Typically, 1-2 PRL Fellows/year

• Mentored research with leading investigators
– Focus on aging and the care of older adults
– Can include basic, clinical, or health services research
• Clinical and didactic experiences
• Students present at professional meetings
– Regional and/or American Geriatrics Society meeting
• Excellent ratings and track record
– Multiple papers with MSTAR students as first authors
– Several Dean’s Prize finalists for best student research
