Web portal on atmospheric environment is developed as a be-lingual information
resource in area of atmospheric physics and chemistry and environmental applications.
It opens an access to integrated thematic information, environmental data, models and
results as well as to relevant educational resources for professional community, students
and general public.
The portal has all typical component and services. Also it has specific scientific services
and instruments, which are on-line access to models and algorithms, thematic data
collections and extensive educational resources of different level.
The portal is designed as a set of interrelated scientific sites. Each scientific site is an
information-computational system designed in Internet technologies. Namely this makes
the portal quite an appropriate instrument for performance of investigations within
interdisciplinary research projects devoted to environmental studies in Siberia.
INTAS grant 00189 support is acknowledged.

AIR-EIA is designed to provide improved access to state-of-the-art
multimedia information resources on Air Pollution aspects of
Environmental Impact Assessment. The objective is to exploit, and
integrate, multimedia contents and services including, dynamic,
interactive on-line information resources.

resource available on the web on atmosphere and environment
(http://www.ess.co.at/AIR-EIA) being currently developed by ESS with
partners as a project of INFO 2000 Programme (AIR-EIA); this builds on
results of on-line distance learning projects MUTATE, as well as a most
recent IST project in the domain of technical training and environmental
information and simulation projects such as GAIA and ECOSIM.
Basic site "Lake Baikal"
The site contains the first results of scientific assessment of the environmental
and climatic situation in two regions important for climatic variations under
natural and anthropogenic pressure, increase of environmental concern of local
population via environmental education on the base of their own particular
situations presented at regional GIS.

Integrated Regional Studies
An IRS must:
• assess the influence of regional processes
on Earth System functioning (and vice-versa)
• be integrative (natural and social sciences,
all components of the Earth System, planning
to synthesis)
• contribute sound scientific understanding in
support of sustainable development in the
region
• be scientifically-driven by scientists in the
region, but with global collaboration
Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere
Experiment in Amazonia (LBA)
• 80 research groups - 600 scientists
• How does Amazonia function as a
regional entity (e.g., natural cycles of
water, energy, aerosols, carbon,
nutrient and trace-gases)?
• How will changes in land use and
climate affect the biological, chemical
and physical functioning of Amazonia,
including its sustainability and
influence on global climate?

Interdisciplinary Integration Project of SB RAS
«Siberian Biosphere-Geosphere Programme:
Integrated Regional Research of Climate Changes»
Recently the Center initiated a project “Siberian
Geosphere – Biosphere Program: integrated
regional study of contemporary natural and climatic
changes” (SGBP), which has been selected for
funding as an Integrated Interdisciplinary Program of
SB RAS. In this Project efforts of 14 Institutes of SB
RAS and RAS as well as 5 Universities are
coherently joined to initiate relevant study of the
region.
Main objectives of the project:
To organize the system of multicomponent monitoring of Siberian mesoscale naturalterritorial complexes on the biological, chemical, physical and technogenic components
of the regional geosphere-biosphere system, and to create the informational basis for
structuring, storage and free access to the cumulative and incoming data on
observations and measurements.
To prepare basis for multifactor modeling of basic processes of regional natural-territorial
complexes development, taking into account the interaction between main components
on the basis of climatic model system, and to develop a guidance basis for forecasting of
geosphere-biosphere changes in Siberia in the context of the sustainable development
of the region.
To investigate interferences of global and regional (Western Siberia, in the first place)
climate characteristic changes caused by natural and anthropogenic factors.
To prepare a scientific technological basis and a national scientific body for inclusion of
the Programme into large international projects, supported by IGBP.
