The Tale of Written by Lady Murasaki Shikibu; considered the Genji world’s 1st novel; showed the lives of Japanese nobles. Japan developed a military society lead by generals called shoguns. 1. Samurai and daimyo took over Japan as emperors lost influence. 2. Samurai warriors lived honorably. 3. Strong leaders took over and reunified Japan. I. Daimyo a) The daimyo (landowners) needed to protect their land. b) Daimyo hired samurai (warriors) to defend their property. Protect my land please! The structure in Japan’s society was Shogun on top, followed by daimyo, samurai, and peasant. The Emperor? Distracted by court life at Heian. So the Shogun takes care of things, ruling in the Emperor’s name. II. Samurai What is best in life? To live and serve with honor. Maybe to kill enemies. a) samurai = servant in Japanese b) Samurai: paid with land or food. c) Followed strict rules called Bushido “the way of the warrior”: behavior, honor, loyalty, discipline. • Samurai were highly trained warriors who followed a strict code called Bushido. • What does it mean to be disciplined?
