ShareGeo – a spatially enabled
DSpace
• Implemented Geo-Search functionality
using the open source OpenLayers API
with access to Google Maps
• Results of searches are shown graphically
on a map as bounding boxes
• Searching done on a database table
storing the coordinate limits of the
bounding box of the dataset

Progress to date
Current Stats (Jan 2009 - July 2010):
• 3487 unique users
• 3277 data downloads
• 99 datasets deposited (though not many
voluntarily)
7
How to encourage deposit…
2 key strategies:
1. Offer an open version
2. Create a plugin to enable direct deposit
to the repository from where users are
creating data

Future technical improvements
• Visualize actual data with plug-in application
• Provide data in other formats, including webservices
• Add features such as annotations, tagging and
ratings
18
Reasons for optimism …
• OS OpenData of course
• INSPIRE legislation
