Post Approval Monitoring Training Module
Definitions
Post Approval Monitoring is a program through which the IACUC
can ensure and document program integrity, compliance with
regulations and guidelines, and adherence to the approved protocol.
PAM can serve as a facilitator for information exchange between
researchers, and the IACUC and vice versa.
PAM can provide assurance to regulatory agencies and VA TECH
that animal experiments are monitored for compliance with
approved IACUC protocols.

PAM Goals
• Ensure animal well being
• Protect the Institution
• Ensure regulatory compliance
• Resource for the research community
• Facilitate science and help achieve compliance

What PAM is NOT
• the Animal Cops
• a replacement for the IACUC
• required by the USDA, PHS or
AAALAC, but it is strongly
recommended

Regulatory Basis for PAM
•USDA Title 9; section 2.31 CFR:
IACUC Functions
•Public Health Service (PHS)
 The ‘Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory
Animals
U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization
and Care of Vertebrate Animals used in Testing,
Research, and Training

PAM Process
For-Cause
Reporting concerns about animal use or abuse
is provided at the IACUC website:

The IACUC has an established procedure for
investigating and resolving complaints.

Veterinary staff
• Any protocol complimentary to IACUC semiannual inspections

PAM Logistics
• PI’s and laboratories will be contacted and a visit
scheduled
• A PAM visit generally takes 1 hour (if you are prepared)
• PAM Findings are documented
• Discuss findings with PI and research staff
• Suggestions on amendment submissions are made if
necessary
