Industry Players
U.S. Green Building Council
(www.usgbc.org)
USGBC is a non-profit organization whose membership
consists of architects, manufacturers, engineers,
contractors, designers, consultants, professional societies,
environmental organizations, governmental organizations,
financial institutions, and others, who are committed to the
idea of sustainable building practices.
US Green Building Council
• Developed LEED Rating System to
encourage consideration of the environment
when constructing new buildings
• LEED Rating System is a points-based,
self-assessment system, where individual
points are awarded for meeting specific
environmental/energy criteria.
LEED Rating System
• Currently, we have the opportunity to assist
customers in achieving 9 potential credits.
(See LEED Status Matrix)
• Remember, our doors help them qualify;
they will not get them the point!
Industry Players
Scientific Certification Systems
(www.scs.org)
Via its Forest Conservation Program, SCS audits and
certifies forest managers and forest product
manufacturers under FSC standards and
principles, and materials management standards.
SCS Certification
• Recovered content
– SCS certification (EPC) is for recovered fiber
content of doors.
– 40% Recovered content certification meets
requirements for 2 LEED points
• (Materials and Resources, points 4.1 and 4.2)
Industry Players
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The FSC is an independent NGO which promotes
environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial,
and economically viable forest management.
Industry Players
Smartwood
(www.smartwood.org)
Smartwood audits and certifies forest managers and
forest product manufacturers under FSC’s
standards and principles.
FSC Certification
• Certification designed to assure customers
that the manufacturer is using wood that
originates from certified forests.
• Currently available only in ESC door.
FSC-Certified Doors
• FSC Standards = 70% wood-fiber based
material, by weight or volume, must be
from FSC-certified source.
“Certified Doors”
• In FSC context, talking about forest
management
– Potential LEED credit (Materials and
Resources, credit 7)
• In SCS context, talking about materials
management
– Potential LEED credits (Materials and
Resources, credits 4.1 and 4.2)
Formaldehyde Content
• All doors currently contain added
formaldehyde.
• USGBC considers added formaldehyde in
composite-fiber products only
(NOT stave core, and not adhesives used in assembly!)
• Use of formaldehyde-free crossbands will
allow ESC door to meet LEED requirement
for “no added formaldehyde”
Formaldehyde Content
• “Large Chamber Test Method” used to
determine off-gassing of formaldehyde from
final product.
• Unfinished and Enviroclad UV finished
door tested in 1997
Low-VOC adhesives
• All doors qualify for 1 LEED point, for use
of low-VOC adhesives.
(Indoor Environmental Quality point 4.1)
Enviroclad UV Finish
• UV-finished doors qualify for LEED credit
(Indoor Environmental Quality credit 4.2)
(Low to no VOCs in stains, topcoats)
