Infrastructure development
• The UofL research enterprise has grown dramatically over the last decade, with a
corresponding growth in administrative support. Continuing business process
enhancement and development of increased service orientation in research
administration is a current focus.
• Research administration should provide mechanisms to assure accountability, training
and periodic review of all participants and processes in research
• As a research university, UofL must encourage and nurture strong research,
discovery, scholarship and creative activity in all of its academic disciplines
including the creativity of the arts and humanities, basic scholarly research and
translational and applied research.

The Education Mission – The EVPRI works with the Provost, Vice Provosts for
Undergraduate and Graduate Affairs, and with the Deans, to assure the
integration of research, discovery, scholarship and creative activity into all of the
educational programs of the university.
For many prospective students, UofL is a school of choice because of the
opportunity to be engaged, as students, in the research and discovery
experience.

Direct scholarly communication - UofL faculty directly share the fruits of
research, discovery, scholarship and creative activity with the world through the
traditional academic means, including publications, performances and
presentations at professional conferences.

Translation and application – UofL provides mechanisms to rapidly translate the
use of basic discoveries for solution of problems and provision of opportunity for all.
These opportunities are synergistic with already strong areas in clinical medical
practice as well as in applied science and technology programs.

Innovation and commercialization – There is opportunity for pursuit of
development and commercialization of appropriate university discovery and
ideas. Current efforts are directed toward unification of the processes from
concept to commercialization with stronger central management and focus.
Expectations and reward structure for faculty, staff and students must be fair
and well understood.
The EVPR should be in a position of helping researchers engage in key
university provided opportunities for:
• intellectual property, (patent, copyright) and licensing (OTT)
• interaction in private and governmental economic development opportunities
• new business development (Metacyte)
• business, investment and research partners (Nucleus)
Going Forward – Next Steps
(Proposed for your consideration)
1. Modify existing EVPR to Executive Vice President for
Research and Innovation – remain in OOP
2. Begin search for EVP for Research and Innovation
3. Conduct review of Research Strategic Plan consistent
with 2020 Plan
