Thinking Like a Scientist
Observation
• QW# 1 What is an observation?
• To make observations you would use
one or more of your five senses to
gather information about the world
around you
Lets Make Some
Observations!
• Take a look at this object. Describe it
using as many words as possible.
(Eyes)
• I am now going to light the object.
Describe it now.
• Close your eyes and listen. What do
you hear? (Ears)

Observations
• The next sense we are going to use is
touch! There is an envelope on your
desk, close your eyes and take the
object out of the envelope and feel
them. Do not look at them!
• Answer: Bead, Pipe Cleaner, Penny
Lets Make Some
Observations
• With our eyes close smell the three jars
in front of you. What does it smell like?
• Finally, we are going to taste three
liquids to determine what each
substance is.
Qualitative and
Quantitative
• Qualitative - are descriptions that do
not use numbers
• Example: The cat is black.
• Quantitative - are observations that use
numbers
• Example: There are 5 black cats.
Inferences
• QW #2 What is an inference?
• Answer: when you explain or interpret an
observation
• Can Inferences be proven right or wrong?
• Yes, by conducting experiments.

Measuring
• QW#3 What kind of tools do you use to
make measurements? What units does
each tool use?
• Tools: Graduated Cylinder (ML), Triple
Beam Balance (G), Beaker (ML),
Rulers (cm or inches) ect….
