The Plot
• Uranus hated all of his children, but
particularly the monsters
• He sent the monsters to the underworld,
Tartarus
• Gaea asked her other children the Titans to
rescue the monsters
• Only Cronus agreed to help
• He overthrew his father
After the overthrow
From Uranus’ blood came
Giants
&
Fierce fighters
More like men than gods

• Cronus became ruler of the earth

Cronus’ fear & demise
• Cronus feared his children would destroy him
• Swallowed all of them but Zeus, who escaped
• When Zeus grew up, he and Rhea waged war
on Cronus
• A long battle followed
• Eventually Cronus spit up his children
• The monsters helped Zeus & gave him
weapons
• Cronus, although assisted by some of the
Titans, was defeated
A New Leader & World
• Zeus divided the world with his brothers &
sisters (and himself)
• Hades – in charge of underworld
• Poseidon – in charge of oceans, horses,
earthquakes
• Zeus – in charge of gods and men from Mt.
Olympus
• Hestia – goddess of hearth and home
• Demeter – goddess of agriculture
