Emergency Management Community Service Program
The Department of South Carolina Veterans of Foreign Wars
Emergency Management Program is a partnership between our
organization and the State Emergency Management Agency. In
providing resources such as volunteers, staging areas (Posts and HQ
locations) and Rapid Deployment Communication Systems (RDCS)
during times of disasters .
When Hurricane Katrina struck the gulf coast, VFW Posts throughout
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama provided shelters, lodging, food,
communication and other essential services for the evacuees.
In addition, the Department will provide response teams with
transportable wireless 3/4G communication systems, which will allow
evacuees the capabilities to go “On- line”, to sign up for emergency
services from FEMA, SS, VA, SBA and other Local, State and Federal
agencies; expediting the help they so badly need.

During times of disasters, communication is one of the most critical tools needed in the affected
areas. Our Emergency response teams will provide the tools for wireless broadband
communications.
The equipment is transportable and self contained with various power options. Which means,
once the equipment is on site; communication is up and running in a matter of minutes instead of
hours or days.
A virtual “Hot Spot” (WI-FI) provides a Wireless LAN and broadband cellular provides the
Wireless WAN. (2 Ethernet ports are standard). Up to 20 computers can be linked to the
equipment with a radius of 1 to 5 miles.
Data communication is the standard for managing the resources that are needed in a disaster.
For additional information on South Carolina VFW’s Emergency Management Program,
