Media Cache
HGST’s disk-based caching technology provides a large Non-Volatile Cache (NVC) on the media that
results in improved reliability and data integrity during unexpected power loss along with a significant
improvement in write performance (even at high workloads compared to solutions with limited NAND
or flash-based NVC)
Step1
Data is recorded to
Media Cache location
closest to the head
Enhanced Write Performance
-
~2.5X avg. improvement in Random Write
performance for aligned 4Kn/512e workloads
Step 2
Final writing to home
completed during
background idle time
Note: Disk space used for
Media Cache is < 1% of total
user capacity and is separate
from the user LBA space
Improved Reliability
-
100% data integrity across unexpected power loss
Firmware Based Implementation
-
Sophisticated firmware algorithm implements
caching mechanism without additional flash or NVC
Media Cache boosts write performance of 4Kn/512e aligned workloads up to ~2.5X
