fötterna under vintern.
The choice if you’re after warmth and comfort during
the winter.
arktiska klimat i hela världen.
Besides it’s a very ecological choice that uses the
”small circles”-principle. The material is gathered
locally, and is available around the world in arctic
climates. The workload is modest, the shoe hay can be
used until its worn out and the just thrown back to
nature to give nourishment to new hay.

Different kinds of sedges (Carex), which are avaliable all
over the world, but dominantly in temperate regions.

•Carex rostrata is the best kind of Carex to use in
our local area. The most important aspect is that the
leaves are wide enought to be able to use the
”häckla” to comb it to a soft texture. Carex with
narrov leaves are not possible to work, it will just
slide through the häcklas comb without dividing.
•Cut the Carex far down the stalk with a knife. I use
a small fishing knife (see picture). One of my Sami
acquantances use an ordinary cutting knife.

Min samiska
bekant använder en vanlig förskärare.

*I need a inlay sole to the shoes. (and the shoe hay, besides
the sole).
*Traditionally the Sami used the head hide of the reindeer.
Like the leghides (the bellings) the hair of the head hide is
more firmly attached to the hide than the hairs on the
remaining reindeer hide. The head hide is called galloe
(spelling?) in northern Sami, or Härna.
The hide of the head doesn’t need tanning, only scraping
and drying of the hide, and then cutting the soles into a
fitting shape. The soles should lay with the fur up towards
the feet in the shoes.
During modern times the Sami have also used wool soles or
wool innershoes in the Sami skoes. In this project I will try
both and evaluate.
•Extra currrriculum: Galloe has also bee used for blankets. Lots of
headhieds were sewn together and tha back of the blanket was sewn in
wool cloth.
Here there will be a picture of
the soles and a ”Galloe”.
