1. Gather all academic information
2. Create account on application websites
and begin inputting information
3. Have someone review your application
before you submit it
4. Submit all supplemental documents
along with application (as attachment or
mail it)
5. Now it’s waiting time. . .

Who should I ask to write a letter
of recommendation for me?
• Choose someone:
– Who relates to your major
– Knows you academically
– Knows you as a person outside of class
– Knows your abilities, strengths, interest

 Ask for letter at least 3 weeks prior to due date to
give plenty of time for person to create it
 Ask if they can keep letter on file so you can
request another letter when you need one
 Request electronic PDF version of letter
 Alternate who you ask for letters
 Tell person when you need it by and what its for.
Personal Statement
 Your chance to tell how special you are!!
 Be HONEST and SINCERE
 Dig deep, telling about unique events that you
participated in.
 Prove that you are an EXCELLENT fit for their
campus!

Myths
• I won’t get a scholarship because my GPA is
too low.
• I’m a top student. Scholarships will come to
me.
• If I apply for a loan, it will lessen my chances
of getting a scholarship.

What is a Cal Grant?

Three types of Cal Grants - A, B, C
State funded monetary grants
The awards do not have to be paid back.

Who can apply for Cal Grant?
• Submit the FAFSA and your verified Cal Grant GPA by
the deadline
• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
• Be a California resident
• Attend a qualifying California college
• Be in a program leading to an undergraduate degree
or certificate
• Be enrolled at least half time
• Have registered with U.S. Selective Service (males 18
years of age)
Cal Grant A
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Used for tuition and fees at public and private
colleges as well as some private career
colleges.
• You need to be working toward a two-year or
four-year degree.
• Pays up to:
– CSU $5,970
– UC $12,192
– Private $9,223
Cal Grant B
• Minimum 2.0 GPA
• For disadvantaged and low-income families.
• Pays up to $1,473 freshman year
Cal Grant C
• Minimum 2.0 GPA
• Enrolled in a 4 month long vocational program at
– California Community College
– Private college
– Career technical school
• Pays up to $547 and $2,462 additional at private &
Career Tech School
• Up to 2 years funding
