OUR CHALLENGES
• Making our voice heard in Brussels: 16.500
Lobbyists - 20.000 officials
• Enlargement: increasing complexity & different
representation structures in new member states
• EU: democratic process is best, but it is
complex & unpredictable
=> Requires a lot of effort & good communication
Taiex Workshop, Sofia 19 & 20 April 2006
Lobbying? Is…
• It’s official
• Participation at all levels
• Communication, both political & factual
• Common voice := strength
• Working tools « position papers »
• Contacts with the institutions in Brussels and in
each country
• Communication with the press
Taiex Workshop, Sofia 19 & 20 April 2006
HOW DO WE WORK?
• Unity = strength
• The right network for each issue
• Our industry networks
• The Alliance for a Competitive European
Industry
• UNICE
• Other players
Taiex Workshop, Sofia 19 & 20 April 2006
BUT LOBBYING WORKS
A FEW EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSES
• WEEE directive: 15 years before it reached the
statute book (2.5 billion euros cost savings / year)
– most capital goods out of scope.
• Changed retaliation list on US Foreign Sales
Corporation Act: estimated savings > 2 billion $
• Noise emissions on machinery used outdoors: a
sector specific issue solved in under a year
• EUP turning a law into a commercial opportunity ?
Taiex Workshop, Sofia 19 & 20 April 2006
COMMUNICATION – it works…

attention
