INTERNET EVOLUTION
1. IP Addressing:
• Each device connected to the internet has to have a unique IP
address.

INTERNET EVOLUTION

IPV4
– Limited No. of Hosts.
– BIG US companies owns most of the IP address
space i.e sprint, MCI … etc,

IPV6 is coming.

Regional Internet Registries
– RIPE (Réseaux IP Européens).
– ARIN (American Region for Internet Numbers)
– APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre)

All ISP’s in GCC are member in RIPE.

2. Domain Names:
– It’s easier to remember names than numbers.
– Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) (www.etisalat.com)
– Country Code Top Level Domain: ccTLD (www.etisalat.ae).

WHY ICANN ?

Who Manages the NET?
–
Who controls:




Domain Name System policies
IP Address allocation
Protocol standardization
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA):
– Contracted by U.S. government.
– coordinate and administer the policies and technical
protocols related to Internet domain names and
addresses.

Since the Internet is becoming a driving cultural
force for humanity, humanity has a natural right
to have a fair say in the networks altering their
lives.
10
WHY ICANN?

Therefore a Global organization is required,
which is:
– Open,
– Fair,
– Inclusive,
– Transparent,
– Accountable and
– Globally represented.
11
WHAT IS ICANN

The Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the nonprofit, private-sector corporation that
coordinates a selected set of the Internet’s
technical management functions previously
performed by the US Government or its
contractors and volunteers.
 ICANN was formed November 1998.
12
WHAT IS ICANN

ICANN is responsible for:
– Domain Name System
– IP Address allocation
– Protocol standardization
– Root Name Servers Management.
13
14
WHY PARTICIPATING IN
ICANN ?
1. Name and Address are the
fundamental resources for Internet use.
2. Danger to lose opportunities in Cyber
space, or ignored.
3. Opportunity to create new and fair
global system
15
Impact on Developing
Economies
1•Unfair distribution of resources
–Stanford U. has more IP addresses than whole
China
2•Fee for Name and Address: tax?
3•English: dominant language
–Other language/culture not accepted?
4•Setting precedence to other cyberspace issues (security etc.)
