Applications
• Rough-in boxes are used to provide an easy method
for the installation of electrical devices in
commercial, light and medium industrial
applications. “Rough-in” boxes can be used with
many different wiring methods, including: conduit,
armored cable and non-metallic cable.

Square Boxes
• Two sizes: 4 inch and 4 11/16
inch square.
• Drawn (one-piece) or Welded
(three-piece) construction.
• Used to house electrical devices
or as a wiring junction box.
• Available with various brackets
for wood or metal studs.

Octagon Boxes
• 3 1/4” and 4” sizes available.
• Typically ceiling mounted.
• Used for lighting fixtures.
• Mounting options - bracketed
and unbracketed boxes are
available.
• Used with conduit, nonmetallic cable or armored
cable.

Fan Boxes
• Specifically listed for mounting ceiling fans.
• TP275 rated up to 70 lbs. max. for fans or
90 lbs. for fixtures.
• TP315 and TP379 - features a bar hanger to
mount between studs. Rated 35 lbs. for fans,
50 lbs. for fixtures.
• TP1300 - PVC fan box, mounts directly to
studs. Rated 70 lbs. for fans, 90 lbs. for
fixtures.

Utility Boxes
• Also known as “Handy Boxes”.
• Mounted on wall surface.
• Used with switches and receptacles.
Switch Boxes
• Available in many depths and for
all wiring methods.
• Mounted in wall.
• Typically used to install light
switches or receptacles.

Masonry Boxes
• Available in single and
multiple gang up to 6 gangs.
• Same function as basic switch
boxes, but typically used in
concrete or brick wall
applications.

Covers
• One and two device covers.
• Tile wall covers - used for boxes
mounted behind tile. Available in
1/2” to 2” raised to accommodate
various wall thickness.
• Surface covers, eg. blank, duplex,
receptacle, toggle switch, GFCI.

• “F” Bracket - For wood studs.
Mounts on face of stud. Provides
automatic set back.
• “S” Bracket - For wood or metal
studs. Mounts on side of stud.
Provides 5/8” set back.
• “VS” Bracket - For wood or metal
studs. Mounts on side of stud.
No set back.

studs. Mounts on side of stud.
Provides set up tabs to hold box in
place before nailing. No set back.
• “VM” Bracket - For wood or metal

Welded and Drawn
• Applies to the construction of the box. Drawn
boxes are one piece construction formed from a
single piece of sheet steel. Welded boxes are three
piece construction, with two sides spot welded to
form the box.
Pry-Outs
• Provide access for cable entrance into the box and
are used with boxes that have internal clamps for
non-metallic and armored cable.

Knockouts (KO’s)
• Supplied on boxes to provide a means of entry into
the box and for attachment of conduit or cable
connectors.
• Knockouts can be dedicated 1/2”, 3/4”, or 1” or
combination 1/2” and 3/4”
• Combination 1/2” and 3/4” KO’s come in two
styles:
– Eccentric touch in one place and
are described as moon shaped.
– Concentric are inside one another
and do not touch.

Plaster or Mud Rings
• These are device covers used on 4” and 4 11/16”
square boxes. These covers are required to mount
devices to square boxes and come in various depths
to accommodate dry wall.
Gangable
• Term used with steel boxes where the sides of the
box are removable and multiple boxes may be
attached together.
Steel Outlet Boxes - Terminology
New Work
• Refers to any job location where a box is to be
installed in a wall surface not finished. In other
words, the studs or joists are still exposed.
Old Work
• Refers to any job location where a box is to be
installed in an existing wall. The opening for the
box must be cut in to the dry wall.
