One major weakness in the way that most people use PowerPoint in education, is
that generally the tutor pre-prepares the slides and the session becomes a one-way
transfer of information from tutor to student. This is well documented as not being an
effective method of learning.
One way to get round this, is include in the presentation some areas where the class
contributes – and the tutor (or students if you have a wireless keyboard) type these
contributions into the presentation – when you exit the presentation these
contributions are automatically saved.
There is a tool in PowerPoint that allows you to do this whilst remaining in the slide
show mode – it isn’t straight forward to set up so I have created some for you on the
following slide. All you have to do is choose the colour combination and font style
and size that you want – then select and copy the box from within the grid – go into
your presentation and paste. You can then resize the box to suite your needs.
Note that the 2 right hand columns the boxes are transparent so that they can be
used with any colour background, the boxes that head the columns – are not editable
text boxes.
This resource is free for anyone to use in their presentations.
Please note that in Office 2007 and later, when you run this presentation, you
may get a security warning – click on options and select ‘Enable’
