Course Expectations

What topics will we
study in this class?
• This Chemistry course will explore the following
topics, which compose the NY State Physical
Setting/Chemistry Core Curriculum:
• Matter, Energy, Atomic Structure, The Periodic Table,
Bonding, Mathematics of Chemistry, Physical Behavior of
Matter, Solutions, Acids & Bases, Kinetics and Equilibrium,
Oxidation and Reduction, Electrochemistry, Nuclear
Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.
What materials are required
for this class?
• 3-Ring Binder stocked with lined paper
• Pen, pencil, (& highlighter)
• Scientific or 4-Function Calculator
(Graphing calculators are NOT permitted.)
• Chemistry Reference Tables (will be
provided)
• All of the above materials must be
brought to class everyday!
How will my quarter grades be
calculated for this class?
• Quarter grades are calculated using a
points system. You will earn points on
graded assignments (tests, quizzes, labs,
projects), as well as for homework
completion and class participation.
Quarter grade = total points earned x 100
total possible points
How will my quarter grades be
calculated for this class?
• Unit Tests are generally 100 points. We will have a
minimum of 3 unit tests per quarter.
• Quizzes are 3-25 points each. Quizzes will be given
frequently and may be announced or unannounced.
• Homework assignments are 2-3 points each.
• Completed Labs are 5-10 points each.
• Daily class participation points are earned by: being present
in class, being prepared for class (having a pen or pencil,
binder, calculator, and Reference Table), and actively
participating in the lesson and/or lab activity.
• Projects are usually 10-30 points each.
• There will be NO EXTRA CREDIT given in this class.
What is the homework policy?
• Homework will be assigned daily and checked
regularly.
• In order to get credit for a homework
assignment, it must be completely done. There
is no partial credit on homework.
• If you are absent when a homework assignment
is checked, it is your responsibility to make sure
I see it when you return from your absence;
otherwise you will receive a zero
Is there Extra Help
for this class?
• I am available for extra help before every
test or quiz, or by request. The extra help
schedule will be posted weekly in the
classroom and on my school website.
What are the Laboratory
Requirements for this class?
• In order to be eligible to take the Regents Exam, you
must complete the required 1200 laboratory minutes and
hand in all labs/lab reports.
• You are responsible for placing your completed labs in
the lab basket at the end of each lab period (or by the
next class period if it must be finished for homework).
Points will be deducted for labs that are turned in late.
• Students who have not handed in required labs by the
end of a marking period will receive no credit for the labs
for the quarter, but have 5 weeks into the next quarter to
complete all missing labs for Regents credit.
What happens when I am
absent from class?
• It is your responsibility to see me about missed classwork,
labwork, and homework and to show me the homework that
was due on the day of your absence.
• Music lessons, theater performances, guidance appointments,
field trips, etc. do not excuse you from your classroom
responsibilities or your homework! If you know ahead of time
that you are going to miss class, you must notify me and see
me ahead of time to pick up classwork and homework
assignments.
• If you are in the building on the day of a test (or an announced
quiz), you must take the test/quiz that day or you will receive a
zero. You may not attend music lessons on the day of a test.
• If you are absent on the day of a test, an announced quiz, or a
lab you must make it up! Make-ups can be done in the Science
Resource Room (Rm. 341) and must be done in a timely
manner.

Be prepared and get to class on time! (Not only should you be in the
door, but also be in your seat and have your homework, pen/pencil, binder
with paper, reference table and your calculator.) Referrals will be written for
repeated latenesses.
Do not bring any food into the classroom. It is not smart to be eating
food where there are chemicals around.
Personal, Non-educational cell phone use is not permitted in the
classroom. This includes texting. Referrals will be written for cell phone
use.
If you happen to be late, do not disrupt the class! Quietly find your seat
and catch up with where the class is.
Show respect and consideration towards everyone in the class and
expect the same consideration in return.
In addition to being posted in the classroom, daily homework assignments,
lab due dates, projects, test/quiz announcements, and my extra help
availability will also be posted on my school website.
Students and parents should feel free to email me with any questions or
concerns.
