Ocean Basin
•
the third largest and deepest
ocean basin in the world;
•
operative since 2003;
•
designed to carry out tests of
structures and equipments used
in the exploration and production
of oil and gas offshore.
•
the ocean basin simulates the
ocean enviroment making it
possible to study the behaviour
of structures and equipments in
profound waters (up to 3000
metres).
Brazilian scientific production
• Brazilian Scientific Production (*):
- 15th of the world
- 1st of Latin-America
• 2.02% of the global scientific production
• UFRJ: among the top ten Latin-American Universities (**)
* Thomson Scientific; Scopus Database, 2007

Evaluation of the Brazilian Higher Education
Institutions (IES): CAPES (Coordination for
Improvement of Higher Education Personnel)
•
CAPES plays a very significant role in
the expansion and consolidation of
graduate
courses
(master
and
doctorate) throughout the Brazilian
territory;
•
CAPES has a system to evaluate the
academic excelence of Master’s and
Doctoral courses in Brazil;
•
CAPES assigns grades from 3 to 7
(55% of the UFRJ courses scored
above the national average – 5, 6 and
•
7).
•
CAPES also takes part in the
elaboration of the international scientific
cooperation and development policy
It has a Thesis Database to make
it easier the acces of scientific
information. The database is part
of CAPES Portal de Periódicos.
