Drugs
Drugs are substances, other than food, that change
the structure or function of the body or mind.
Some drugs need a prescription or are available Over
the Counter (OTC).
Why drugs are taken?
Medicines are drugs that are
used to treat or prevent
diseases and other conditions.
Examples: Vaccines, antibiotics,
aspirin, etc.
Drug use Safely and Dangerously
Drug use is the term for taking a drug correctly,
following instructions for dose, time, etc..
Drug misuse: is using a drug, such as a prescription drug
for its unintended purpose. Example would be taking
ADD medication for weight loss or for “chemical”
energy.
Drug Abuse: Occurs when an individual needs to take
more and more of a drug to achieve the benefit they
received while first misusing the chemical.

Narcotics: Compounds that dull the sense of pain and/or
induce sleep.
Inhalants: Ingredients found in household items, glue,
paints, gas, that when introduced in the body cause
impairment of body functions.
Designer Drugs: Chemicals or other substances that are
used to mimic (copycat) the effects of other drugs.
