FINANCIAL EDUCATION IN THE
WORKPLACE

Improving Workplace Productivity, Health and Harmony
through Personal Financial Education for HR Managers
and Employees.

Being a Competitive and Compassionate Employer
in a Knowledge-Based Economy
2
The Big Picture

In his book “ The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People ”,
Steven Covey teaches us to “ Start at the End. ”

Meaning that Successful People start Successful Projects
by first determining what The Goal is, and where The
Finish Line is. The challenge is to then work backwards,
from Z to A, in determining where to start your Great
Endeavor.
3
The Employer’s Challenge & Goal

For every Employer and Employee in the 21st Century,
the challenge will be the recognition that we live in a
“Knowledge-Based Economy.”

The Industrial Revolution is behind us, and
The Information Age is really just dawning.

The Goal for any Employer - large or small - is obvious,
compelling, and motivating : An Organization that has
an un-trained and un-educated Workforce is not going
to compete and survive.
4
Up The Learning Curve Together
Employer and Employee

This Workshop attempts to start the process of
educating your Workforce about their Personal
Finances, because “ Money Stress ” kills people
and their productivity.

This is true for both the Employer as well as the
Employee. The Employer must be in the huddle too.
5
Stress Kills ….

Stress Kills. It is The Silent Epidemic of The 21st Century.
Amidst the fast-pace of The 21st Century, everyone is so
busy Making Money, that they have no time to learn the
skills to manage it properly.

This is the curse of a Society that moves too quickly :
Everyone is too busy being busy to actually Get Ahead.
Everyone is working and running with their head down.
6
Getting Ahead

And so no one knows where they are headed with their
financial future.

Most people are running hard to stay in place financially,
or just doing laps, but not truly Getting Ahead. And they
know it. And it eats at them, all the time.

And that’s really Stressful … worrying and afraid that your
hard work is not really getting you anywhere.
7
Financial Insecurity

For the average Worker, there is no Finish Line, no
Comfortable Retirement, no American Dream, and
no Peace of Mind.

Their financial insecurity is the stress that gnaws at
most of your Employees, wakes them up in the middle
of the night, causes arguments with their Spouse, and
constantly distracts them at work. For many average
Americans, Retirement is a mirage. Instead, they believe
that they will have to work until they die. Working hard
every day, with no end in sight, ever. That’s more than
just Stress for people. That’s downright depressing and
de-motivating.

How can you expect the best from an Employee who
feels stressed this way, every day ?
8
Manage Money as well as Make It

If You and your Workforce want to survive and succeed
in this “ Information Century ”, then teach your People
how to Manage Money as well as Make It.

If Money trumps People in your Company or Organization,
that myopia is going to kill your Workforce, and your
entire Organization.

History is very clear on this point : Taking care of People
is Job # 1, or else none of your other Goals are achieved.
9
The Total Employer

This is where The 21st Century Employer is smart, far-sighted,
proactive, and caring. This is what makes You “ The Total
Employer” Compassionate about helping your Employees, and
also shrewdly Competitive about giving them an edge.

That edge is helping your Employees learn how to Manage Money
as well as Make Money. That’s The Total Employer in The 21st
Century. That’s You, right ?

Become “ The Total Employer ” and assist your Workforce to
Manage their Money as well as Make It. Your compassion will
enhance your Organization’s competitiveness. “ Financial Wellness
in The Workplace ” is gaining traction as a smart Best Practice.

If you are not implementing Financial Wellness …
Your competition is. Do you want to retain a well-educated
and motivated Employee, or do you want them to seek
another Employer who takes better care of them?
10
The Problem

Financial concerns may be a personal matter, but they directly affect
the Workplace.

There is a proven, direct correlation between a Financially Educated
Workforce, and your Firm’s Bottom Line. Research shows that a majority
of Employees have persistent financial problems severe enough to have a
negative impact on their workplace performance.
( Please see the Footnotes )

It’s just common-sense. People bring their problems to work. Especially
Financial problems. “ Money Stress ” is right at the top of the list of
stressors in a person’s life, including the Employer.

The articles in the footnotes confirm the studies that a financially stressed
Employee spends an average of 20+ hours per month taking care of their
own personal financial problems while at work. That’s 240 hours annually
on the clock. Your clock. 240 hours annually is the equivalent of giving that
Employee a six week paid vacation to handle their personal money
problems, at work, on your time. That’s right - A six week paid vacation.
11
The Workplace goes Downhill

Stressed Employees also negatively affect other Employees and your top
Management. Fractious “ Workplace Conflict ” heightens tensions, and your
entire Workplace suffers as relationships deteriorate and Teamwork vanishes.
Employees and Management alike become angry, distracted, less loyal, and
less productive. Insubordination, Absenteeism, and health-related problems
rise as Employee morale sinks. Money Stress is at the root.

Another depressing Stressor for your Workforce is that there are no longer
secure Company-paid “ Pension Plans ”. Those days are over. Today,
Employees need to learn how to save for their own Retirement, or else they
will not ever have one. Employees know their plight, and fear their unknown
future. That’s debilitating.

Insecurity breeds Fear, and Fear is a tremendous Stressor and de-motivator.
Fear paralyzes human beings. Nothing gets done in your Workplace except
arguing and worrying. Your best Employees quit because they just can’t take
the stressful Workplace environment anymore. The Best quit, and The Worst
stay. And The Worst become the cancer that eats at your entire Organization.
Turn it around : Education empowers, and breeds Leaders.
12
The 21st Century Workplace

In the 21st Century, Employers have shifted the responsibility for
an Employee’s Retirement Savings from the traditional Employer
Pension to the Employee now becoming personally responsible
for their Retirement Savings in their Employer-Sponsored 401(k),
403(b), 457, Profit-Sharing, IRA and Cafeteria Plans.

Employees are also being asked to choose Health Insurance Plans
with a myriad of options, which is another confusing financial
headache for them to handle.

The crux of the problem is that the Employee has no training and
tools to do this Financial Planning !

Adding Money Management, Retirement Planning, and Health
Insurance to an Employee’s already-full plate only increases their
stress, especially since virtually no Employee has any true Financial
Education or training in these areas.
13
Best Practices

Asking your Employees to do what they are neither trained nor
equipped to do is a sure-fire set-up for failure. Failures in your
Workplace become a vicious downward spiral : Failure breeds
defeatism, which leads to more failure. Team Morale plummets,
absenteeism and health-related problems rise, and your best
Employees quit out of frustration. Harmony and a “ Winning
Attitude ” are replaced by a myriad of negative human emotions
and actions. Your Workplace becomes poisoned by
“ Bad Actors ”.

Smart and forward-thinking Employers understand that Money
causes angst, and people under stress are less happy and less
efficient, make more mistakes, and have lower morale. “ Money
Stress ” is a direct contributor to Absenteeism, Health problems,
and Employee retention. And any Employee’s problem
eventually becomes the Employer’s problem as well.

Increasingly, astute and proactive Employers are tackling this
problem of Employee Money Stress in the workplace by
initiating Financial Wellness Educational Workshops for their
Employees. “ Financial Wellness in The Workplace ” is fast
becoming a Best Practice.
14
The “ De-Stress ” Solution

Your Employees need to be financially knowledgeable,
involved, and secure with their Money, so that they can
be at their best for You. Their financial Peace of Mind
positively translates into your Workplace in 101 ways.

financially elevating their Employees ? Give your
Employees a fast and fun, on-site Workshop that
will give them valuable Lifetime Money skills.
