• 1950s- Fulgencio Batista was dictator of
Cuba; most people unhappy with his rule
• 1959- Fidel Castro led a group of rebels
against Batista; Castro won and named
himself dictator (Cuban Revolution)
• Immediately named Cuba a communist countrythe government took over all of the farms,
factories, businesses and American owned land.

• January 3, 1961- American president Dwight
D. Eisenhower put an embargo on Cuba; led
to Cuba making deals to trade with the
Soviet Union
• April 1961- Bay of Pigs invasion; Cuban
exiles, trained and financed by the U.S., tried
unsuccessfully to overthrow Cuba’s
government

• October 1962- Cuba gave the Soviet Union
permission to build a missile launching
complex on their land; these missiles had the
potential to reach the United States; ended
at the end of October when the Soviet Union
agreed to dismantle the weapons
• Present day- Embargo still in effect, but the
restrictions are loosening as Cuba works to
become more democratic

Words to know…
• Zapatista- group of Mexicans who support
improved rights and living conditions for
Mexico’s indigenous people; sometimes use
sabotage of the government to make their
point
• NAFTA (North American Free Trade
Agreement)- allowed free trade between the
United States, Canada and Mexico
The problem with NAFTA…
• Some Mexicans believed NAFTA would allow
cheap goods to come from the U.S.
• They thought the Mexican farmers would not be
able to compete with those cheap goods
• On the day that NAFTA took effect the Zapatistas
took over many small towns- this caused a fight
between them and the Mexican army; most
Zapatistas defeated

• There is still fighting between the
Zapatistas and the government
• Zapatistas control small portions of
Mexico and argue for better healthcare,
housing, education and jobs for the
indigenous people
• Have allied themselves with many other
guerrilla groups in Latin America
