Process

 A series of steps involving activities, constraints, and resources that produce an intended output of some kind  Various kinds of process, e.g.

– Mental process – Business process – Image process  What are their similarity?

Process

 Various kinds of process, e.g.

– Mental process • Answer, emotion, etc.

– Business process • product, service, etc.

– Image process • beautiful photo, etc.

Process

 Various kinds of process, e.g.

– Mental process(e.g. reasoning) • Question understanding->complex reasoning->answer – Business process • Requirement analysis->planning->design->implement >product/service – Image processing • Transfer image to matrix->matrix transformation >transfer matrix to new image  Multiple steps © Copyright 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Process

 Why we should have process – Impose consistency and structure on a set of activities – Guide us to understand, control, examine, and improve the activities – Enable us to capture our experiences and pass them along  Some famous examples of process – Systems Development Life Cycle(SDLC) – Software Life Cycle • Request analysis, design, programming, testing, delivery, maintain, etc.

Project

 Temporary rather than permanent social systems that are constituted by teams within or across organizations to accomplish particular tasks under time constraints.

 Two characteristics – Temporary – Clear goal (unique product, service or result) © Copyright 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Project

 Also called temporary  Made over a finite effort or endeavor period of time  A definite start and a definite finish  Two possible endings: – Met its objectives – Terminated before its successful completion © Copyright 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Project

 Temporal nature is very important – The opportunity to market the product is temporary – The project team is disbanded after the project ends  Temporal nature does not refer to the product – Products can be long lasting – E.g. Houses © Copyright 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Project

 Aim for unique product, service or result – Product: tangible, quantifiable artifact • E.g. iphone5s, BTW car – Service: the capability to perform a service • E.g. website for bank-> created the capability for the bank to offer the online banking to its customers – Result: knowledge related outcome • E.g. Experimental result of a research project © Copyright 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Scenario

 Suppose that you are a project manager in a company  Your boss approaches you with a “fabulous” idea.

 To set up ATMs in local grocery stores as mini offices  To offer customers the ability to sign up for car and home insurance services as well as make their bill payments.

Scenario

 What he said – “The exposure in grocery stores will increase awareness of our company’s offerings.” – “Our senior management has already cleared the project.” – “Don’t worry about resources. I’ll dedicate as many resources to this as I can.” – “I want the new ATMs placing in 12 selected stores in our city by the end of the year .” – “You will be the project header!” © Copyright 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Scenario

 Is it unique?

– Yes, because the ATMs don’t exist in the local grocery stores. This is a new way of offering the company’s services to its customer base. While the service the company is offering isn’t new, the way it is presenting its services is.

 Does the product have a limited timeframe?

– Yes, the start date of this project is today, and the end date is the end of next year. © Copyright 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Scenario

 Is there a way to determine when the project is completed?

– Yes, the ATMs will be installed and the services will be offered from them. Once all the ATMs are intact and operating , the project will come to a close.

 Is there a way to determine stakeholder satisfaction?

– Yes, the expectations of the stakeholders will be documented in the form of requirements during the planning processes. These requirements will be compared to the finished product to determine if it meets the expectations of the stakeholder.

Scenario

 One last question – Is this a project?

– Temporary nature?

– Unique product/service/result?

– Yes!

– Then you can start your project!
