Using Library Resources Effectively

Core Skills Choose keywords to find useful books etc. on the library catalogue

Take time to consider key words and phrases that describe your topic because it will help you to find what you need quickly and easily. Don’t just go for the obvious terms. The Library catalogue isn’t as intuitive as Google, although it does try to offer alternative terms when it thinks you have spelt a word incorrectly.

For an example of some keywords

take this link.

Some keywords relating to ‘Metropolis’

Alternative terms Related terms Surveillance Consumerism Commercialism Urban area Capital City Broader terms Society State

Using Library Resources Effectively

Core Skills Choose keywords to find useful books and other resources on the library catalogue

If you had to write an essay on “The portrayal of young people in the media” what ‘keywords’ might you try typing into the library catalogue in order to find useful books? Check the boxes beside the statements that match your thoughts.

A) I would type in my question – The portrayal of young people in the media B) I would decide on certain aspects of the media, e.g. television, news, film C) I might try some alternative terms for ‘young people’, e.g. youth, teenagers, adolescents b and c above

Answers A) I would type in my question – The portrayal of young people in the media It is not usually a good idea to type long sentences in to the catalogue search screen. The catalogue searches for words in the titles of books and some subject keywords B) I would decide on certain aspects of the media, e.g. television, news, film It is necessary to think about what you want to find out about. ‘Media’ would be one keyword, but you should try out some alternative terms as well C) I might try some alternative terms for ‘young people’, e.g. youth, teenagers, adolescents There are lots of words to describe ‘young people’. You should try out a few alternative terms, thinking about how authors might have described them D) I would try out a range of different terms and combinations from statements b and c above This strategy will give you the best search results.

Core Skills Make a reservation on the catalogue if all copies of a book/DVD are on loan

If all copies of a book or DVD are on loan, you can place a reservation so that you are in queue to obtain that item.

Watch this short clip on how to make a reservation http://screencast.com/t/oSmi2x5DfZ

What happens next?

The borrower who currently has the item will be sent a ‘recall notice’ via his/her student email account, asking them to return the item before the new due date. Reserved items automatically become 7 day loans.

When the item has been returned, you will be notified via your student email account when the item is ready to collect from the reservations room on the ground floor of the Library. You have 7 days to collect it.

Core Skills Suggest why the contents page and index of a book will help you to find what you need

When you have found a book that looks helpful, go to the contents page at the front and see if there are any chapters or sections which are appropriate to your research. The index, at the back of most books, will help you to discover whether precise aspects of your research are covered. If so, it will give you a page number. If you cannot find your topics of research in the contents page or index, try and find another book.

Even e-books have contents and indexes.

Core Skills Identify different types of sources on reading lists

You will soon become acquainted with recognising the different sources on reading lists, because you will have to create your own reference lists for your assignment. There is an online tool called Referencing@Portsmouth which will help you to do this.

The most common types of references are also available in print format guides which you can pick up in the Library. Alternatively they can be downloaded from the links below: APA style, 6 th edition Vancouver style Oscola referencing: Primary sources & Oscola referencing: Secondary sources

Core Skills Identify what plagiarism is and how to avoid it

The formal definition of plagiarism that the University uses is: ‘the incorporation by a student in work for assessment of material which is

not their own, in the sense that all or a substantial part of the work has been copied without any adequate attempt at attribution or has been incorporated as if it were the student’s own, when in fact it is wholly or substantially the work of another person or persons.’
