French and Indian War
1754-1763
Why did the French and
Native Americans ‘team up’?
We’ll kick the British out of
the Ohio trading post at
Pickawillany and build forts
to keep the British from
moving west.
Robert Dinwiddie, the British
Governor of Virginia, wrote to
the French military leader in
Ohio:
We’ll build forts
to keep the
British from
moving west.
“Sir, the country located on the
Ohio River is so obviously the
property of the British king that I
am both surprised and hurt on
hearing that a band of French
troops is building forts on this
river.”
(p. 91 S. Studies book)
The French keep
trying to block the
British from moving
West. The French
even take over a

After years of fighting between the
French and British. . . .
• French and British leaders met to sign a
peace treaty.
Even though the French and British
signed a peace treaty, who was
going to ‘have peace’? Pontiac, an
Ottawa Chief, saw a problem.
“It is important for us, my
brothers, that we exterminate
[wipe out] from our lands this
nation [Great Britain] which
seeks only to destroy us.”
Pontiac persuaded some Mingo,
Miami, Delaware and Shawnee to
join him.
They attacked the British forts in
Ohio Country.
Henry Bouquet was sent
to protect Ohio country.
The Native Americans
gave up.
