This is an exercise in 3rd’s Thirds are very consonant and what all
chords are made of in traditional harmony. The first 2 notes of
each of the measures are the root and 3rd of the chord. The 2nd 2
notes are passing tones and the 3rd group of 2 notes are the 3rd and
the 5th of the chord (this applies to the G and C Chords). For the
D chord it is outlining the chord with the root then 3rd a passing
tone then the 5th of the chord

Here is the whole intro. Take this slowly. Realize that there are
only 3 different measures. The 1st and 3rd measure are exactly the
same.
Listen closely to the sound of 3rds. Try to recognize the sound in
other songs. 3rds are used quite a bit in harmony. The other
common interval used is 6ths which are inverted 3rds.

Watch the fingering. It is vital that you do it correctly! If you
use the incorrect fingers you will have difficulty in playing this
song. This ideas of 3rd’s is used in many songs: Rhiannon,
Lonely Bull, Ramblin’ Man and just many other songs.

fret your pinky.
Now memorize this. Take your time. Watch the rests and be
sure to stop sound during the rests. This adds the punch into
the line.
Here is the whole
thing. Take your

closely to what
you play. Ideally
you should get

Start with learning the Chords
• Do in 1st position then once that is mastered
move to Barre chords.
• Once the chords are learned do the melody.
• You will need to figure it out. Hint is that the
Chord Rules and the melody is mainly in the
chords.
• As a group have each person play the chords
and then the melody. Help each other out. The
sum of the parts is greater than the whole.

Repeat verse 1
Notes in the G chord are G, B and D
D is D, F# and A
Am7 are A, C, E and G
C is C, E and G.
The melody follows the notes in the chord for the most part.
Whole Song
• This means as a group there should be each
part.
• Everyone should learn the words to the song.
• At least one of you should sing the song.
• For 3 parts, one could play a bass type line,
another the barre chords and the last one fills on
top or arpeggios.
• You might even want to write a hook to the song.
• A hook is a melodic idea.
Put it all together
• This will take some time working as a
group.
• Best if you can work in class and maybe
even some out of class.
• Most important thing is that you start to
sound like one voice not 3 or 4 separate
voices.
Sleepwalk
Song originally performed by
Santo and Johnny on a Steel
guitar.
Sleepwalk introduction. 5th position until the 4th measure 2nd note
then 8th position, switch to 7th position for last note. Then 2nd line
to the 4th position. Introduction ends at the double bar.
Common fingering for these chords. Index
on 1st string, middle on 3rd string, ring on 4th
string and pinky on 2nd string.
Switch to 8th position for the single notes.
Up to the repeat.
8th position. Stretch to get to the
12th fret.
Now Finish It Out
• Take your time.
• Work on one or two measures at a time.
• One person should concentrate on the
chords. This is in 6/8 time so there are 6
beats to a measure.
• Other should work on bass.
• Lastly work on the melody. It is really
great to have 2 people that can do the
melody and then switch off.
Walk Don’t Run
Study in A Aeolian – Old Time
Rock Instrumental
Start With The Chords
• The progression is as follows:
4/4 ||: Am G | F E7 : ||
Best to do as E form of Barre Chords (6th string
root).
Start with learning these chords. Main chords in the song and the part
of the introduction. A bass line is in the music.
A 2nd guitarist would play this. These are only the root and the 5th of each
of the chords. Really just a simple power chord. This is played 2 times
during the intro. If you have an electric guitar turn the reverb up on this (all
the guitars used reverb on this). In any case palm mute the notes. Do that
by placing your picking hand palm lightly on the bridge so that just a small
part of your hand touches the strings right at the bridge nut.

Be sure to get this whole part down before moving onto the next section!!

Again this starts with the A minor chord in 1st position then for the 2nd measure it is an F chord broken up appreciated.
For the 3rd measure it is an E chord appreciated. Then it ends on an A minor chord (3rds).
Put all the parts together.
• If playing in a group
– 1st person does bass line.
– 2nd person does chords.
– 3rd person does the melody.
• Notice the sound of minor throughout this
song. This is very similar to many other
songs in rock, folk and ethnic styles.
Pipeline
60’s Surf Sound
This is a section by section breakdown.
To put it together use your text book.
Take this slowly
• First part is tremolo picking and just
moving the index finger down the 6th string
rapidly.
• Next comes the bass part. That part is
doubled with the 2nd guitar.
Notice the box around the whole selection. That is not an extra string!
This was done with Power Tab and to export a line that is what happens.
Bass Part. All 1/8th notes. Keep your 2nd finger on the 5th string 2nd fret.
Use your 3rd finger on the 6th string 3rd fret when it comes up.
The 2nd guitar comes in now with the melody
Notice the change here.
The song has moved up a
4th from E minor to A
minor.
Look at the tremolo picking.
This closes up this first part of the song. It will then repeat.
This is an A minor chord broken up. Much like what we had in Walk Don’t Run
Now a G chord broken up. Wow, who stole from who on this!
Now the F Chord Broken Up.
Now it goes back to the beginning
• Use your text to help put the whole thing
together.
• It isn’t that hard but will take you some
time as there are a number of parts.
• One person should play the chords to this.
• There are other parts that can be added in
once the basic song is learned.
Wipeout
Really more of a drum thing. This
is just a blues in the key of C.
Start with the chords.
• 4/4 ||: C | | |
| F | | C | | G | F | C | G : ||
Memorize these before playing the song. Do them
as barre chords not first position chords. Really
take you time.

This is the first 4 bares of this song. All in C. Just repeating the fixture each measure.
The same idea against the F chord
Again repeating the idea on C then for the next G move to 7th position.
Back up to 8th position for the F.
This closes out the first part then chords are played as short staccato notes on beat 1 of
every other measure. This is where the drums take off.
The drum section. Note that the progression is still followed.
This is the guitar solo section. For C it is in the 8th position using lots of double stops.
For the first F it is in 1st position. Then back to 8th position for the C, 3rd position for the
G, 1st position for the F and then 8th position for the rest of the solo.
Now put it all together.
Sunshine of Your Love
This is also in your book. Just some
parts here to help you. Very important
to listen to this before playing it. Lots
of distortion on the guitar.

The solo section
The solo can be Clapton’s or Yours
• I included the Clapton solo but you may want to
do your own solo.
• If you do your own solo (suggested), then start
with the first part of Clapton’s.
• He quotes Blue Moon in the opening statement.
• This is very common to quote another song in
the solo. Jazz particularly does that.
• Lastly, use the book to put the form together.

Scales to use against this progression.
1. For entire progression use E blues.
2. For the E and E7 chords: E blues, E mixolydian (A scale starting with E), E minor pentatonic,
E major pentatonic scale, E dorian mode (D major scale starting and ending on E), E 1/2whole tone.
3. For the A and A7 chords: E blues, A mixolydian, A minor pentatonic, A major pentatonic, A
dorian mode (G major scale starting and ending on A), A 1/2-whole tone scale.
4. For the B7 chord: E blues, B mixolydian, B minor pentatonic, B major pentatonic, B dorian
mode (A major scale starting and ending on B), B 1/2-whole tone scale.
Introduction is above. You slide on the first note from the 3rd fret to the
5th fret of the 2nd string. By playing the 2 E notes together it really fills
up the overall sound.
Get this first as it is the feel. It is in a shuffle. It does not have to be exact.
The feel is the important part not the exact notes. For the 3rd fret of the 6th
String you bend the note up to the pitch of the 4th fret 6th string.
For the A chord. Note in the last measure the triplets.
This part will take some work. The B7 is all triplets and for the 1st half
of the A is triplets then a flurry of 1/16th notes. You should hammer and
pull on these notes. Then back to a triplet. To do this properly you
must listen to the recording!! I can’t stress that enough. The E7 is just
a turnaround.
The tacit figure.
I have included the solo section
• While the solo section is difficult it is not
impossible to learn.
• Note that for me it would be better to take some
of the ideas you like and use them. That would
be better than just doing the solo note for note.
• When performing, if you are doing it note for
note and you make a mistake you can get
yourself into trouble and not find your way back.
Be sure you can solo without the crutch of doing
SRV’s solo note for note.
Now Put it all together.
• Divide up the parts. With a power trio you will
have bass and guitar. But it can work to have a
lead in there also.
• Towards the later part of SRV’s playing he
added in a keyboard player. That was to fill the
sound. A rhythm guitar could accomplish the
same thing.
• If your group wants to do a different song let me
know, I may be able to help with the music. But
it won’t be as detailed as the Pride and Joy.
• Note that SRV used a little distortion not a
significant amount.
House Is Rockin Backup
Another SRV
This part is very difficult but cool if you can
get it down.
1st section is what the piano plays adapted to
guitar.

Now the Solo Section
• Again take the ideas. You don’t have to do
it exactly.
• Many of the ideas that SRV played in this
solo were taken from players like Chuck
Berry.
• Get the feel as that is overall what is
important.
Again – Listen to the record
• I didn’t write out the progression as from
the handouts it is obvious. But if you don’t
have it from there listen to the record.
• There are only 3 chords in the whole song!
Those are C7, F7 and G7. But there is
quite a bit going on with the 3 chords.
• Look at some of the solo ideas. There are
enough ideas here to keep you going for
weeks.
Sultans of Swing
This is a minor key song. Most of it
falls into the Aolean Mode. Again Start
with the chords. We will work on the
various parts.

You have choices on many of these. But it is best if you can get both down.
Get the Chords Perfect
• You need to get the chords perfect before
moving on.
• Do them in both positions.
• Be sure that you sing this song. Even if
you can’t carry a tune sing. Listen to the
record, the vocals aren’t as much singing
as talking.

Notice that this is almost all chord tones!!! To play like the record you
must use your fingers on your picking hand and not your pick. Some of
the lines just can’t be played properly with a pick. Sound is also incorrect
with a pick. Next couple of pages covers the main riffs done in this song.
Work on them before putting the song together.
Note that you must work on this quite a bit to really get it. I have
not included the solo yet but have the main idea in the riffs pages.

OK That Is It
• You could work the whole thing out or just do it
by various parts that you like.
• Remember though that the fingers are used and
not a pick.
• We won’t go over every part as that would take
the whole term (I have done that before) but
even so work on the main ideas.
• Particularly work on the intro and the final part of
the solo.
• Adding in a breakdown area really helps in
breaking up the tune and adding interest.
If time permits
• For rest of course will work from book.
• You will need to do what I have done with
these other songs.
• Odds are that we won’t get that far but you
could do any of the songs in the book.
• I will help each group at that point.
• But you must have mastered the tunes up
to here!!
