IPIRTI, Bangalore, - 560 022 MILESTONES IN INSTITUTE’S HISTORY 1962 - INDIAN PLYWOOD MANUFACTURERS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION (IPMRA) WAS FORMED AS CO-OPERATIVE RESEARCH LABORATORY UNDER CSIR 1970 - RE-DESIGNATED AS INDIAN PLYWOOD INDUSTRIES RESEARCH INSTITUTE (IPIRI) 1978 - IT WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE MINISTRY OF INDUSTRIES, GOI. 1988 - TRAINING FACILITIES IN MECHANICAL WOOD INDUSTRIES TECHNOLOGY WERE ESTABLISHED WITH FAO/UNDP/GOI ASSISTANCE 1990 - ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT & FORESTS, GOI. 1992 - THE INSTITUTE WAS RE-NAMED AS INDIAN PLYWOOD INDUSTRIES RESEARCH AND TRAINING INSTITUTE (IPIRTI) THE INSTITUTE IS A SOCIETY REGISTERED UNDER THE KARNATAKA SOCIETIES REGISTRATION ACT, 1960 SINCE IT’S INCEPTION RESEARCH TO DEVELOP PANEL PRODUCTS FROM WOOD AND OTHER LIGNOCELLULOSE MATERIAL INCLUDING AGRO RESIDUES. FOREST RESEARCH PRIORITIES FOR NEXT 20-25 YEARS The main topic of the thrust areas on which research would be focussed for the future are. Wood alternative-from bamboo, agro and forest residue. Utilization of plantation timber for higher grade panel, Particle Medium Board Density Fiber Board (MDF) and oriented strand board. Bio- adhesive and non-formaldehyde adhesives LCA and energy auditing of structural products from wood and other lignocelluloses material to enhance their use in place of conventional structural components made from non-renewable-metal, mineral, petro- chemicals etc. Wood products resistant to fire, weathering, soil contact, sea water, radiation etc. Disaster resistant & luxury resort houses from naturally occurring, renewable material. AGENDA 4. FOREST RESEARCH PRIORITIES FOR NEXT 20-25 YEARS… CONT. High density lumber products from wood to replace metal beam. Wood use and Environmental issue. Surface treatment of wood/panel product by chemical modification or heat treatment to enhance series life/resist degradation due to use and weathering. Capacity utilization of Bamboo for high end products especially in North-East India. Wood plastic composite for food and other packaging. Bio-residues for packaging Industry. AGENDA 5. MAJOR RESEARCH WORK Development of processes for various resin systems viz., phenolic and amino resins, Resin system based on bio materials like tannin, lignin cardanol and soya for partial replacement of phenol and also optimizing the process parameters to improve the quality of the end product Development of layered composites like Peeling & gluing studies using plantation timbers for various types of plywood including decorative, block board, other composites and also Laminated veneer lumber AGENDA 5. CONT… Development in Solid Wood Products viz., Sawmilling technique for low girth plantation timber for higher yield, Laminated wood product with or without finger jointing technique, establishment of wood Finger jointing, edge lamination facility and fire retardant chemical treatment for wood for manufacturing flush doors, Protection and Enhancement of service life of wood and panel products by way of Development of end coats for log protection, prophylactic treatment of logs and glueline poisoning, Development of eco friendly preservatives and preservative treatment for panel products. AGENDA 5. MAJOR RESEARCH WORK Development of Non-wood products : Institute has developed successful technologies for manufacturing several mat based industrial products from bamboo i.e. Bamboo Mat Board [BMB], Bamboo Mat Veneer Board [BMVC], Bamboo Mat Moulded items [trays], Bamboo Mat Corrugated Sheet [BMCS] for roofing. Bamboo Mat Ridge cap, Bamboo Mat Compregs, Bamboo Mat Moulded Skin Board Bamboo Veneer Flexi –plywood,Bamboo Particle Board. Another important new area of research is utilization of agro residues like rice husks, coir, bagasse jute, wheat straw, rice straw etc. for making panels or boards suitable for specific end uses in place of plywood/wood particle/fibre boards. Affordable Housing System – Under collaborative project sponsored by DFID/TRADA UK and BMTPC New Delhi, IPIRTI has developed cost effective housing systems by using plantation wood, glued laminated wood, plywood panels from non-wood origin like BMB, BMVC, BMCS for various housing components like rectangular beams, I-beams, Doors, Window shutters, trusses, gussets, etc. AGENDA 6 .
