Glossary of Terms
• Thermal mass flowmeter
– Measures the mass flowrate of a fluid (liquid or gas)
by measuring thermal energy transfer
– Hastings only manufactures gas flowmeters
• Flow controller
– Combines a thermal mass flowmeter with a PID loop
and flow control valve

3
Mass Flow vs. Volumetric Flow
• Unlike liquids, gases do not have constant volume
• Volumetric flow changes with:
Temperature

Pressure
4
Mass Flow vs. Volumetric Flow
• Mass flow is independent of temperature and
pressure changes.
• Measure the mass of the gas or number of
molecules of gas
• True mass units can be expressed as:
– lb/hr, gm/sec, etc.
• Can also be expressed as a standard volumetric
flow unit:
– SCCM, SLM, SCFM, etc.

5
Mass Flow vs. Volumetric Flow
• Standard volumetric flow units look like volumetric
flow units, but they are mass flow units.
• Standard units are referenced to STP
– Standard Temperature and Pressure
• STP must be defined
– Hastings standard temperature = 0 C
– Other temperatures are possible, but must be
referenced on the order (and on quote)
– Pressure reference is always 760 Torr (1 ATM)

Mass Flow vs. Volumetric Flow
• With STP values, you can convert from mass flow
to volumetric flow:
P1 T 2
Flow 1×
×
= Flow 2
P2 T1

(for 0 C vs. 20 C)
• Note: Temperature and Pressure are absolute
– T (Kelvin) = C + 273.15
– PSIA = PSIG + 14.696

Flow Control
• Standard valves are
normally closed (spring)
• Use PID loop to adjust
valve voltage required to
open the valve
• Orifice is a fixed variable
in flow control equation
• THI requests Upstream
and Downstream
pressures to size orifice
for proper flow control
