What is SUNIA??
SUNIA is a six day seminar for
high school students
interested in the United
Nations, International Affairs,
meeting people from ALL over
Canada, and the Rocky
Mountains!
Who Runs It??
SUNIA is run by 12
university aged
volunteer counselors

Canada…and sometimes the
WORLD!!

Where Is It?
SUNIA takes place
at the Goldeye
Centre which is 100
km west of Rocky
Mountain House, and
right in the heart of
David Thompson
country! Goldeye is
the proud host of
heated cabins,
warms showers, and
catered food.
We are situated
on Goldeye Lake
and surrounded
by beautiful
mountains,
waterfalls, and
scenic view
points.
Academics!
When you think of academics at SUNIA, dispel all images
of classrooms and teachers!! It’s summer, we want you
to enjoy it!

The week out at SUNIA is
jam-packed with a wide
variety of quasi-academic
activities including…

Staff-run seminars on
a wide variety of
topics from
backpacking through
Europe, to music and
politics, comic books,
and Southpark
Lectures put on by two UN
Secretariat and a DFAIT
representative, as well as a
peacekeeper from the DND;
they stay with us and
participate in the week’s
activities

A Brief History of the United Nations . . .
•After World War I (1919) recognized need for
international cooperation in Treaty of Versailles:
League of Nations created
•League failed due to American isolationism,
German and Russian exclusion, and general
inability to reinforce declarations
•Term "United Nations" first used by Franklin D.
Roosevelt in 1942
•1945: United Nations Conference on
International Organization in San Francisco
•Representatives of 50 countries attended;
United Nations Charter signed June 26 1945

Six main organs:
•General Assembly
•Security Council
•Economic and Social Council
•Trusteeship Council (Obsolete)
•Secretariat
•International Court of Justice.
Plus a plethora of additional subsidiaries.

General Assembly . . .
•Central organ of the UN
•192 Member states: mutual discussion of international issues
•Attempts to achieve consensus; each state has one vote
The Security Council . . .
•Security Council responsible for maintenance of 'international
peace and security'
•15 member states attempt to solve crisis situations
•Member states may be suspended/expelled from the UN by the SC
for violation of the principles of the Charter
•5 permanent members with veto power
•10 non-permanent members with 2 year terms each
•U.N. reform

Security
Council
The highlight of our academic program
is our mock UN security council.
Participants take on the role of a country and
participate in a real UN style debate
Past conflicts include Iraq, Darfur,
Ethiopia-Eritrea, Lebanon, and IndiaPakistan

Recreation!!!
SUNIA is able to take advantage of
its beautiful surroundings. We go on
several hikes, visit a waterfall, swim
and canoe on lake Goldeye…
…and spend time
playing soccer, football
and capture the flag on
our games field

HIKES!
During the week we go on two hikes; one to
Crescent Falls and one to Mt. Baldy, which is
the highest scenic point in the region

There are 2 sessions held each year in

You may choose either week depending
on which is more convenient for you
