What Thomas
Missed
 Fellowship with his brethren, who could have
encouraged him.
 Hearing the words, "Peace be with you."
 Hearing the words, "As the Father has sent
Me, I also send you."
 Having his understanding "opened...that [he]
might comprehend the Scriptures."
22
What Thomas
Missed
 Having Jesus breathe on him.
 Being told to "Receive the Holy Spirit."
 Being told, "If you forgive the sins of any, they
are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any,
they are retained."
 An opportunity to see Jesus with his own eyes
and have his doubts erased, instead of spending
another week in continued disbelief.

SHOUTS a great deal about the quality of
some of the Lord’s people and some of
the Lord’s churches!

A Discouragement to
Gospel Preachers!
Elijah went through a period of great
discouragement when he felt
betrayed by others.
33
A Discouragement to
Gospel Preachers!
And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done,
also how he had executed all the prophets with the
sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah,
saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if
I do not make your life as the life of one of them by
tomorrow about this time." And when he saw that,
he arose and ran for his life, and went to
Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his
servant there.
34
A Discouragement to

But he himself went a day's journey into the
wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom
tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It
is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no
better than my fathers!" Then as he lay and slept
under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched
him, and said to him, "Arise and eat." Then he
looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on
coals, and a jar of water.
35
A Discouragement to

So he ate and drank, and lay down again. And the
angel of the Lord came back the second time, and
touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the
journey is too great for you." So he arose, and ate
and drank; and he went in the strength of that food
forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the
mountain of God.
36
A Discouragement to

And there he went into a cave, and spent the night
in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord
came to him, and He said to him, "What are you
doing here, Elijah?" So he said, "I have been very
zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the
children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets
with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to
take my life." (1 Kings 19:1-10)
37
A Discouragement to
Gospel Preachers!
This is how a gospel preacher feels
when he sees empty pews where
members should be sitting.
38
A Discouragement to
Gospel Preachers!
Gospel preachers have a right to feel
a sense of betrayal when those who
are supposed to be Christians
intentionally and willfully neglect the
worship of the Lord and the support
of faithful gospel preaching.
39
A Discouragement to

Be diligent to come to me quickly; for Demas
has forsaken me, having loved this present world,
and has departed for Thessalonica--Crescens for
Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. Only Luke is with
me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is
useful to me for ministry.... At my first defense no
one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not
be charged against them. (2 Tim. 4:9-11, 16)

41
A Discouragement to
Potential Converts!
It is a serious enough matter to
neglect and reject the gospel of Jesus
Christ for oneself.
42
A Discouragement to
Potential Converts!
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to
the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if
the word spoken through angels proved steadfast,
and every transgression and disobedience
received a just reward, how shall we escape if we
neglect so great a salvation, which at the first
began to be spoken by the Lord, and was
confirmed to us by those who heard Him. (Heb.
2:1-3)
43
A Discouragement to
Potential Converts!
It is even more serious to cause
others to neglect and reject it.
44
A Discouragement to
Potential Converts!
Then He said to the disciples, "It is impossible
that no offenses should come, but woe to him
through whom they do come! It would be better for
him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he
were thrown into the sea, than that he should
offend one of these little ones." (Luke 17:1-2)
45
A Discouragement to
Potential Converts!
The child of God who chooses not to
assemble is not only neglecting and
rejecting the great salvation that is in
Christ Jesus, but is also causing
others to do so, by his/her influence.
46
A Discouragement to
Potential Converts!
So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went
down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to
Cyprus. And when they arrived in Salamis, they
preached the word of God in the synagogues of
the Jews. They also had John as their assistant.
Now when they had gone through the island to
Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false
prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus, who
was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an
47
intelligent man.
A Discouragement to

This man called for Barnabas and Saul and
sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the
sorcerer (for so his name is translated) withstood
them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the
faith. Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled
with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and
said,
48
A Discouragement to

"O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the
devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not
cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord?
And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon
you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a
time."
49
A Discouragement to

And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he
went around seeking someone to lead him by the
hand. Then the proconsul believed, when he saw
what had been done, being astonished at the
teaching of the Lord. (Acts 13:4-12)

saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of
the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of
the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of
God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the
stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no
