United Nations: 2010 National Competitive Recruitment Examination (An overview for applicants) Examinations and Tests Section Strategic Planning and Staffing Division /OHRM UNITED NATIONS 1 Outline • Background • NCRE in 2010 • Exam format • Exam preparation • How to obtain further information 2 Background • The first NCRE was held in 1974. • Since 1981, the NCRE is held on a yearly basis to help not-adequately represented Member states improve their representation within the UN secretariat (upon agreement with their governments). 3 2010 National Competitive Recruitment Examination (1) Give access to junior professional level positions (P-2) to nationals from countries not adequately represented Tentative List of participating Countries for 2010 NCRE Afghanistan Angola Antigua & B. Island Yemen Latvia Nepal 4 2010 National Competitive Recruitment Examination (2) The disciplines in which the exam is offered are selected on the basis of projected needs of the UN in the following two years as well as on the availability of candidates in the current rosters The 2010 NCRE is offered in the following disciplines: * Administration * Demography * Economics * Human Rights * Legal Affairs * Radio Producers (Arabic, Chinese or French) * Security * Statistics *Web Design/Development 5 2010 National Competitive Recruitment Examination (3) ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA 2010 NCRE applicants must: • Be a national of any of the participating Member States • Not be more than 32 years old as of 31 December 2010 • Hold at least a first-level university degree relevant to one of the offered occupational groups • Be fluent in either English or French • Apply by 19 September 2010 (11:59PM ETS) through Inspira* (Careers Portal http://careers.un.org) * In case of technical problems, candidates are asked to write to: [email protected] 6 More information about inspira is also available on the inspira FAQ: https://itsforreal.un.org/faq/faqs-inspira/ 2010 National Competitive Recruitment Examination (4) • “Qualitative Screening”: Candidate has to meet all the eligibility requirements (i.e. nationality, age, language skills, first-level university degree in relevant fields). • “Quantitative screening”: If there are more than 40 qualified candidates per occupational group from a given Member State, then the 40 best candidates of this Member State are convoked to the exam. Criteria are: work experience, advanced university degree, knowledge of additional official languages, publications, etc. 7 Exam Format (1) The Exam Date • The examination consists of a written examination and an interview. • The written examination has 2 parts: . Specialized Paper made of short questions and essays (3 hours 45 min) .
