Working Group Summary progress :

Follow up for the future: Ensure consistency among all blue

SLS-LEC: Long Erasure Codes (‘tornado codes’) BOF (2 of 2)
•
Working Group Summary progress:

Work finalized in this meeting.

Difficulties in having right perception by other Areas felt. This is an
important issue since the implied coding solutions would penetrate
also into higher layers data structures (e.g. post –pass recovery of
“erased” frames or packets).

Cross-Area presentation has been held. Design ideas of LEC solutions
have been presented addressing both:

Approach at Frame level (i.e. constant length input data)

Approach at (Space/CFDP) Packet level (i.e. variable length
input data).

Next steps depends on CESG/Agencies decisions.

D. OTHER ISSUES
1. Future Plans
Mission Profiles

Preparing for the future. Targets need to be clearly identified

Need for top-down approach: identify requirements

SLS proposes to develop a white book on profiles that are not
satisfied with current CCSDS BBs

The white book will be a living document (moving targets)

New Future Mission Profiles BOF to be discussed at Spring 2008
meeting

2. New BOFs

Authentication Protocol BOF

Optical Modulation & Coding BOF
SLS AREA
Authentication / Encryption (1/3)

Security WG is almost ready to output two recommended practices :

authentication algorithm

encryption algorithm

No work on TC authentication or encryption protocol scheduled in
security WG

Strong demand from commercial S/L operators for standard TC
authentication protocol

SLS & SEA area should tackle this work item
SLS AREA
Authentication / Encryption (2/3)

Objectives (1/2) :
develop TC authentication protocol (based on TC space data link
protocol)

involve in the process TT&C knowledgeable persons from security
WG

capitalize on solutions developed for dual-use missions (like
Galileo, Pleiades-HR, …) since TC authentication protocol is very
safety critical

SLS AREA
Authentication / Encryption (3/3)

Objectives (2/2) :

create a BOF with 3 work items :
review the authentication and encryption algorithms red
books


gather operational requirements for TC security protocol
establish charter for WG (or specify work item to be added to
SLP WG charter)


M. Cosby (QinetiQ/BNSC), given his background in secure TC
links, could lead this work item ?
SLS AREA
Optical Mod & Coding BOF

Goals

Develop a table of optical mission profiles
Develop baseline requirements for the forward error
correction (FEC) coding and modulation needed for each
mission profile



Establish charter for OMC WG
Schedule

Spring 2008. White paper on application profiles.
Fall 2008. Report on baseline requirements validated by at
least two agencies.

Spring 2009. If enough interest has been generated, develop
a charter for a WG or include scope in existing Coding &
Synchronization WG.
