Financial Aid & Student Financial Services Summer & Fall Orientation

What’s the Difference?

FINANCIAL AID STUDENT FINANCIAL SERVICES  We review the FAFSA once submitted by the student.

 We handle Bright Futures awarded to students.  We award Financial Aid to the student according to the results of the FAFSA.

 We accept payments for tuition and other University charges.

 We disburse financial aid and University refunds.

 We process Florida Pre-Paid tuition plans and other third party billings.

Both offices assist students with debt management.

FAFSA EVERYONE qualifies for some type of financial aid!

• The key is to apply EARLY!

• Federal Grants (Pell, ACG, SMART, SEOG, & TEACH) • Federal Work-Study • Federal Stafford Loans • Federal Perkins Loans Every year complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as it becomes available on January 1 st.

How to Complete the FAFSA

Apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov

Both parents and student need a pin to sign FAFSA electronically .

How to Complete the FAFSA

Apply on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov

Use previous years tax information or estimated tax information if taxes are not already completed.

 View your Financial Aid Status  The Financial Aid Student Toolkit provides status updates and alerts that need to be taken care of.  Check your Account Statement  Provides up to date billing information and is available 24/7.  Account Refund Setup  Tells FSU how you would like your refund sent.

 Mailed to your local address  FSU SunTrust Account  Payments  Online payments are made under the “make a payment” link .

 Parental Access  Parent/Third Party Access allows others to have access to your account information.

 In Office Payments:  Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm • FSU Card • Cash • Check or Money Order  Online Payments : • FSU Card • Debit Card • All Major Credit Cards • Electronic Check $7 convenience fee for all online transactions

Florida Prepaid

 Billings are automatically entered • We do not need to see your Prepaid card.

Florida Prepaid dorm is handled by the Housing Office.

Steps to Accepting Loans

 Accept awards via Office of Financial Aid student toolkit Complete: • Loan Entrance Counseling • Master Promissory Note • www.studentloans.gov

 Federal Parent Plus Loan • Complete: • FAFSA (if not all ready of file) • Direct Loan Federal Plus Loan Application • Direct Loan Master Promissory note for parents  To print an application and for more details please visit our website.

Bright Futures

• Academic Scholarship • Maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete 24 credit hour per academic year.

• Medallion Scholarship • Maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA and complete 24 credit hours per academic year. All Classes dropped after drop and add MUST be REPAID *Amounts are subject to change

Scholarships

 Florida State University Scholarships • Automatically reviewed when you applied for admissions to the university  Private Scholarships • Report to OFA via student’s financial aid toolkit • Research will continue while you are enrolled • Local organization (rotary clubs, Kiwanis clubs, fraternities, sororities, churches, and banks) • Department of interest • FSU financial aid website at: www.finaid.fsu.edu

• Google Search  Send private scholarships to Student Financial Services and be sure to include your student number and the terms and conditions of the scholarship.

Disbursing Financial Aid

 Student Financial Services disburses financial aid on the 5 th day of classes:  Financial Aid is:  Grants  Loans  Scholarships  Bright Futures  Tuition and Fees are automatically deducted.

 Once all tuition and fees are paid any excess money is refunded according to the Account Refund Setup.

Important Dates:

 Financial Aid Disbursement:  Summer Session C: Tuesday, July 5th  Fall: Tuesday, September 6th  Tuition Payment Deadline  Summer: Friday, July 8th  Fall: Friday, September 9 th • A late fee of $100 may be assessed to unpaid tuition.

• Unpaid tuition may lead to cancelled schedules and additional fees.

Debt Management

 Financial Aid and Student Financial Services are always available for financial counseling.

Set a realistic budget and stick to it.

Exhaust all other alternatives before borrowing.

Only borrow what you need.

Avoid credit card debt. If financial circumstances change contact us!
