A School Safety and Violence Prevention Curriculum

Introduction to the Curriculum

Why Are We Here?

12 to 22 percent of students require mental health services

Fulfilling Expanded Ohio Revised Code Requirements Content

: Four hours of training in: Prevention of child abuse, violence and substance abuse Promotion of positive youth development

Fulfilling Expanded Ohio Revised Code Requirements Required for:

Individuals employed by school districts or service centers as: Nurses, teachers, counselors, school psychologists or administrators who work in elementary schools Encouraged for all K-12 school professionals

Timeframe and Deadlines Currently employed

professionals: K-12 school Must complete at least four (4) hours of in service training by March 30, 2009;

and

Must complete four (4) hours every five years thereafter, regardless of duration of service or prior training.

Timeframe and Deadlines Newly employed

professionals: elementary school Must complete this in-service training within two years of employment,

and

every five years thereafter.

Present curriculum (either in one or multiple sessions) in compliance with Ohio Revised Code Section 3319.073.

Modifications to the curriculum must be identified; identify program as the Ohio Department of Education’s Safety and Violence Prevention Curriculum. Use only authorized copies of materials: provided free or at duplicating cost for individuals participating in the program. 23
