About ITS
• Information and Technology Services (formerly ITCS, ITSS and
MAIS) was formed in 2009 to create a shared, cost-efficient IT
infrastructure. We provide technology and communications
services that support the academic and research needs of the
Ann Arbor campus. We also run the administrative computer
systems and execute the IT security strategy for our three
regional campuses (Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn), as well as
the health system. Our mission is to deliver efficient and
adaptable technologies that differentiate U-M from our peer
institutions.

Commitment to the University
These are the areas where ITS will focus on in 2010:
• IT Rationalization – data driven strategy for making the best
decisions about IT spending at the university
• Shared Infrastructure – this will decrease storage costs,
increase collaborative potential, and move us closer to
meeting advanced research computing needs
• Shared Products and Services – we won’t lose sight of critical
applications and services planned before our reorganization
IT Rationalization
• What is “IT Rationalization”?
– A data driven strategy for making the best decisions about IT spending at the
university
• Why is it necessary?
– The university needs to maximize the benefit of its IT investments
– In a time of extreme budgetary stress, IT rationalization will enable leaders to
make data driven decisions about IT sourcing, which allows us to provide more
competitive services for less money.
– Savings will be achieved through elimination of unnecessary redundant
services and through leveraging the right delivery option
– The rapidly changing technology landscape.
– Researchers, instructors, and students need a core set of technical resources
to support their academic and research work

Shared Infrastructure
ITS established implementation plans for several new services:
• Storage Project
– Focus: deliver several storage solutions to campus (file storage,
administrative storage, long-term backup/archiving).
• Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Project
– Focus: make software delivery to students, staff and faculty easier and
more efficient.
• Data Center Consolidation and Planning Project
– Focus: plan data center management across the university more
efficiently. On our space-limited campus, there are over 180
data/server rooms, which incur significant energy costs.
