LASIK Surgery
Camellia Gardens Eye Center
What is LASIK?
• Procedure uses computer controlled laser
to reshape cornea
• Surgical procedure to correct
– Myopia
– Hyperopia
– Astigmatism
• LASIK is acronym for laser assisted in situ
keratomileusis
What Does LASIK Involve?
• Patient is given sedative and eye is anesthetized
• Computer-guided scalpel cuts thin layer (flap) of
cornea
• Flap is lifted and moved to the side
• Laser is carefully aligned over cornea
• Computer-controlled laser burns away tissue to
reshape cornea
• Flap is returned to original position
• Patient is observed for 1 hour and needs
assistance driving home
How Well Does LASIK Work?
•
•
•
•
•
Depends on amount of correction required
With low to moderate myopia
Over 90% achieve 20/40 or better
About 50% achieve 20/20
With high myopia (more then –7D) or high
hyperopia (more than +4D), fewer achieve
20/40 or 20/20
• Complication rate is less than 2% after two
years
Will You Need Glasses After
LASIK?
• Most patients over 40 will need reading
glasses
• Patients who wore bifocals might choose
monovision
• One eye for seeing at a distance
• Other eye for reading
How Soon Will Your Eyes Heal?
• Greater the correction, longer the time to heal
• Eye sight usually improves immediately
• For several months
– Night vision might be poor
– Some patients see glares, halos, and starbursts in
dim conditions
– Dry eyes need frequent eye drops
• Eye sight continues to improve for six months
What Preparations Are
Needed?
• Analysis of eye pressure, shape of cornea,
thickness of cornea
• Schedule eye exam to determine
– Health of the eyes
– Current vision
• Set appointment for surgery
• Make financial arrangements
